  • Rural wild-style camping on a working farm in north Norfolk
  • Sheringham beach 20 minutes' drive; 30 to Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure
  • Grass pitches edging the Blickling Estate and close to pub and deli
Looking for no-frills pop-up camping on a family-run working farm? Set on the northern extremes of the Blickling Estate near Aylsham in Norfolk, Broom Hill Camping might just fit the bill. If you’re keen on secluded green meadows with just the sounds of rustling trees as a backdrop, it should definitely be spot on for you. As this really is wild-style camping, on-site facilities are limited to portable toilets, one communal shower and a cold-water washing-up sink. Keeping body and soul together is not a problem here, though, as barbecues are allowed on the camping field, and there’s an award-winning village shop with a café a deli counter in Itteringham (five minutes’ walk). If you'd rather eat out, there is also a cracking pub in Itteringham which is particularly well-known for its Sunday roasts. Norfolk’s country lanes are quiet, making them smashing for gentle family bike rides through ancient market towns and past Saxon churches, and there are miles of footpaths around the farm.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: It was a lovely and well maintained campsite and the proprieters are friendly. The pitches are nice and level and there was space between us and our neighbours. 'In my opinion I liked that there was um a uh that it was very big and I liked it that the toilets weren't too far away so that you could walk to them. And also that you could walk to the church.' - Mabel, 7 years old.

Disliked: I would have preferred if the water I used for washing up got a little hotter but maybe it's not possible.

From the manager: I am sorry that you felt that the local amenities were not as expected. The pub in the village is not mentioned on the pitchup.com listing as it is currently closed for refurbishment due to a change of ownership, due to open mid-August, as stated in the information emailed to you prior to your arrival. Once the pub has re-opened, the pitchup.com listing will be updated accordingly. I would be interested to know where you saw the village shop opening times advertised; they should be as per the information sent to you and displayed in the washing-up area. I will contact the shop and enquire as to whether there was a reason they perhaps had to open late/close early, although very unusual for this to happen.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Location was easy for days out. Hosts were friendly- never queues for a shower even though there is only one. Toilets and shower are cleaned regularly. Village shop is fab and Walpole pub is walking distance with tapas menu

Disliked: No hot water at washing up area. Water pressure means only 1 tap can be used at a time

Local attractions

The Jacobean mansion at Blickling Estate (10 minutes’ drive) was built on the ruins of the ill-fated Anne Boleyn’s family home; today you can tour vast rooms, wander formal gardens and hike in the woodlands. And if you enjoy ticking stately piles off your must-see list, medieval moated Mannington Hall (five minutes) rewards you with Victorian follies, a ruined church and rose beds. It’s only a hop to North Norfolk beaches too, by the way. At low tide, Sheringham (20 minutes) has plenty of sand, while there’s a Victorian pier and fish and chips shops in Cromer (25 minutes). The expansive beach at Holkham (40 minutes) gives the kids – and the dog – a chance to run around and let off steam. A day of splash zones and dino-themed treasure trails at Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure (30 minutes) will bring the hidden kid out in all of you, or you can wear yourselves out on rope courses at BeWILDerwood Norfolk (35 minutes).
