Can’t decide between the Norfolk coast and the Broads National Park for your holiday? Here’s a great solution – book yourselves into one of the luxury lodges at Alder Country Park and you’ll be in prime position to explore both on your break. Easy access to the coast and countryside isn’t all that this location has going for it, either – it’s also handily on the edge of North Walsham, with a cosy pub a couple of minutes’ walk away and plenty of useful amenities (including shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and banks) within a mile’s walk. Not that you even have to go that far to find something to eat, as you can simply stroll over to the on-site restaurant, The Olive Tree, which serves up high-quality breakfasts, lunches and dinners alongside a full drinks menu. Working up an appetite for these meals shouldn’t be a problem given that all guests have access to the park’s gym, spa facilities and outdoor pool (open in high season only). The lodges are all fully in keeping with their smartly landscaped surroundings – each one has two comfy bedrooms and is fully self contained with its own bathroom and well-equipped kitchen (including a cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine and dishwasher). Bedding and towels are supplied to keep things nice and easy for guests. Each lodge has plenty of space to relax, either inside the cosy lounge (with sofas, TV and gas fire) or outside, where there’s a barbecue and a splendid private hot tub where you can bubble away out in the fresh air.

Local attractions

To the Broads National Park first perhaps? The northern stretch of Britain’s largest area of protected wetland is about 15 minutes’ drive away. First stop should probably be the Museum of the Broads (20 minutes’ drive), before you head out to explore the rest of the park on foot, by bike, on a boat trip or paddling yourself on a paddleboard or canoe. While you’re in that area, you may also like to stop in at the excellent Wroxham Barns (15 minutes) to browse the shops or take the kids to the junior farm and fun park, or let them loose on the adventure trails at BeWILDerwood Norfolk (20 minutes). And of course you’ll want to go to the coast – perhaps to the popular Mundesley beach (10 minutes), where seals can be spotted from October to February, or up to Cromer (20 minutes), which has a pier, a lovely sandy beach and a tropical zoo as well as some renowned seafood.
