Stylish, cosy and light-filled are three adjectives that could neatly sum up the open-plan accommodation at Saving Grace, a bijou wooden lodge in the village of Bawdeswell, 15 minutes’ drive from Dereham in Norfolk. The heated and insulated unit includes a double bedroom with a king-size bed and ensuite (towels and complimentary toiletries provided), as well as a living area in an airy, vaulted space. Lots of thoughtful extras include a Smart TV, DVDs, books and games ready for lazy (or rainy) days, local maps for your Norfolk adventuring, and a king-size bed-settee in the living area for extra guests. All the basics (tea, coffee and so on) are supplied in the fully equipped kitchenette, and for even greater convenience, you can order in grocery packs ahead of time (extra costs apply). Outside in your flower-filled private garden (secure for any visiting dogs), you can dine by solar or LED light on warmer evenings, drift away while soaking in the exclusive-use hot tub and spark up the barbecue (in season). Need to pick up supplies? It’s five minutes’ walk to the local basics store. Not a fan of alfresco cooking? Take a stroll down to the tea rooms in Bawdeswell (10 minutes’ walk) for a delicious lunch or afternoon tea.

Local attractions

How about a day on the Norfolk coastline? At low tide, Holkham Beach (40 minutes’ drive) seemingly stretches almost to the horizon, backed by dunes that are overwintering homes to oystercatchers and terns, or spot more birdlife at National Trust - Blakeney National Nature Reserve. Have a wander around the fishing harbour at Wells-next-the-Sea (both half an hour), take a dip in the North Sea from the sandy beach or spot ‘The Lifeboat Horse’ sculpture by artist Rachael Long by the quay. Step back in time to visit the conservation village of Heydon (20 minutes), mentioned in 1086’s Domesday Book and one of the few privately owned villages in Britain. Have a potter around its leafy streets to admire the red-brick (mainly) Georgian houses, visit the local pub on the village green and have a snoop in the antiques shop. For more days out with an historical theme, nip into Norwich (half an hour) to look around the Romanesque cathedral, marvel at the stained glass and enjoy moments of silence in the cloisters. Alternatively, explore the train museum at Whitwell and Reepham Railway Station (10 minutes), where you can also take heritage steam-engine rides at the weekend.
