Croft Naturist Country Club: Indoor pool

General

  • Friendly family-oriented naturist club 20 minutes' drive from Wisbech
  • Two pools, sauna and large heated clubhouse
  • 18-hole putting green, shuffleboard and pétanque

Fancy a family foray to the fens, free from the need to be fully clothed? Cast your kit off among a friendly community of like-minded folk at Croft Naturist Country Club, in a peaceful rural spot on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border.

Settle in here and it’s likely you’ll not be in much of a hurry to head out again, such is the lengthy list of leisure facilities to keep you entertained on site. Get that newly-liberated bod moving with games of volleyball, mini tennis, pétanque, shuffleboard and table tennis, or perfect your aim at the 18-hole putting green.

On a sunny day you can top up your all-over tan with a swim-and-sunbathe session at the outdoor pool. Should you encounter a less clement day, retreat to the indoor pool or, for a small extra charge, warm up in the sauna or hot tub. Other undercover facilities include a games room, TV room and a clubhouse with a small stage and dance floor for party nights (some of which are chargeable).

For eats, guests are welcome to use the small kitchen area (with microwave, fridge and freezer) or stoke up the coals on a barbecue – forage for the necessaries at farm shops and supermarkets 20 minutes away in Wisbech. There’s also a cracking collection of country pubs within a 10-minute drive.

A very friendly site with good sized pitches and facilities. There isn't really anywhere to walk to should you wish to leave the site i.e. no local pub or shops but if you turn up with all you need then that shouldn't be a problem.
Unfortunately the club house was closed due to Covid, but they still had 2 live bands on that were good and the event was really well attended so well done to the organisers.
There is a small outside pool and a slightly larger indoor one, both of which were in use. One to return to post Covid!

It was a nice site, well laid out.

    Disliked:

We would have liked to have had contact with the host so he could have let us know the facilities were in fact open. The cover was pulled over the indoor pool. Hence why we thought it was closed. The hot tub had a sign on it “was being cleaned” and the outdoor pool was closed. Until we were packing up to leave, another guest informed us you remove the cover yourselves to go for a swim. None of this was explained, we were looking forward to having time in the pool and hot tub. That was the reason for booking the site, the added amenities which we could have used, if we had been informed they were open. If there was a sign up to inform guests what the policy was in the first place, this would not leave guests disappointed.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, the hot tub was closed due to Covid 19 and we have been leaving the solar cover on the indoor pool open all day so as to minimise guests touching it, but someone had put it back over the pool to keep the water warmer. The outdoor pool was closed for three days due to high winds and rain from Storm Francis hopefully next season you will be able to visit us with less restrictions and some warmer weather.

Local attractions

Robe up again and get ready to roam – there’s much to do in the surrounds.

If you’ve come this way for great gulps of fresh air, might you be tempted by days of horse riding (10 minutes’ drive away in Outwell), fishing at Townsend Lakes (five minutes) or birdwatching at the Welney WWT Centre (25 minutes)? Bike rides are always an excellent idea in this forgivingly flat part of the land, as are walks along the Old Croft river next to the site (a particular source of excitement if you happen to be a dog).

Whizz off to Wisbech in 20 minutes or so, not just for shops and restaurants but also for a potter around the National Trust-managed Peckover House, a tour of Elgood's Brewery and a flying display at Fens Falconry. Just outside town, Fenland and West Norfolk Aviation Museum (25 minutes) showcases a different form of flight for folk fascinated by planes.

Outings a little further away might include a trip to the handsome cathedral in Ely (30 minutes), a jaunt to wave at the Queen at the Sandringham Estate (40 minutes) and a day at one of Norfolk’s gorgeous beaches – head to Holkham, an hour away, for a naturist stretch of sand.

Must see

  • Ely Cathedral (11.4 miles)
  • Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve (17.5 miles)
  • Peterborough Cathedral (19.3 miles)

National Trust

  • Peckover House and Garden (7.7 miles)
  • Oxburgh Hall (14.9 miles)
