Indoor pool

General

  • Friendly family-oriented naturist club 20 minutes' drive from Wisbech
  • Two pools, sauna and large heated clubhouse
  • 18-hole putting green, shuffleboard and pétanque

Fancy a family foray to the fens, free from the need to be fully clothed? Cast your kit off among a friendly community of like-minded folk at Croft Naturist Country Club, in a peaceful rural spot on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border.

Settle in here and it’s likely you’ll not be in much of a hurry to head out again, such is the lengthy list of leisure facilities to keep you entertained on site. Get that newly-liberated bod moving with games of volleyball, mini tennis, pétanque, shuffleboard and table tennis, or perfect your aim at the 18-hole putting green.

On a sunny day you can top up your all-over tan with a swim-and-sunbathe session at the outdoor pool. Should you encounter a less clement day, retreat to the indoor pool or, for a small extra charge, warm up in the sauna or hot tub. Other undercover facilities include a games room, TV room and a clubhouse with a small stage and dance floor for party nights (some of which are chargeable).

For eats, guests are welcome to use the small kitchen area (with microwave, fridge and freezer) or stoke up the coals on a barbecue – forage for the necessaries at farm shops and supermarkets 20 minutes away in Wisbech. There’s also a cracking collection of country pubs within a 10-minute drive.

As this is pro dominantly members club, whilst they all said hello when walking about, only one member spoke to us during the evening event. They seemed a bit clicky.

Any place where you don't need to worry about trying to get your pants on in the tent before venturing outside is going to get a big thumbs up in my book! And that's the point here; no clothes, period. If the British weather's holding up that's a great thing and this is a big 'site, so there's plenty of space to roam (or even swim - indoors or out). When we stayed (mid-week) it was fairly quiet, which suited us just fine. The owners are friendly and accommodating, whilst the site is very well kept - from the toilets blocks to swimming pools and general communal facilities.
It's rural, meaning quiet (just what we wanted) and the wild rabbits that run around are very sweet.

    Disliked:

Didn't much appreciate the noisy sit-on lawn mower working around us for a good hour, disrupting the peace and relaxation. Can't say the grass really needed cutting at that point and bang in the middle of the afternoon, it could've been done in the morning if really necessary, but it was just down to bad timing.
Self-timer lights in the toilet blocks could do with setting for a while longer before they automatically switch off, leaving you pants around ankles (if you were wearing any) in the dark!
And there were a couple of periods when unseen RAF jets were tearing around the sky and disrupting the peacefulness, but that's obviously nothing to do with Croft Country Club.

Directions

From the B1099/A1101:
Croft Country Club is about half a mile from the junction of the A1101 and the B1094 (Halfpenny Toll Road). Two signs saying 'Greenend' and 'Croft' are situated at the top of the lane leading to the park (at this point most satnavs say you are heading into the middle of a field, as the lane 'Greenend' is not shown on most maps).

Local attractions

Robe up again and get ready to roam – there’s much to do in the surrounds.

If you’ve come this way for great gulps of fresh air, might you be tempted by days of horse riding (10 minutes’ drive away in Outwell), fishing at Townsend Lakes (five minutes) or birdwatching at the Welney WWT Centre (25 minutes)? Bike rides are always an excellent idea in this forgivingly flat part of the land, as are walks along the Old Croft river next to the site (a particular source of excitement if you happen to be a dog).

Whizz off to Wisbech in 20 minutes or so, not just for shops and restaurants but also for a potter around the National Trust-managed Peckover House, a tour of Elgood's Brewery and a flying display at Fens Falconry. Just outside town, Fenland and West Norfolk Aviation Museum (25 minutes) showcases a different form of flight for folk fascinated by planes.

Outings a little further away might include a trip to the handsome cathedral in Ely (30 minutes), a jaunt to wave at the Queen at the Sandringham Estate (40 minutes) and a day at one of Norfolk’s gorgeous beaches – head to Holkham, an hour away, for a naturist stretch of sand.

Must see

  • Ely Cathedral (18.3 kilometres)
  • Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve (28.2 kilometres)
  • Peterborough Cathedral (31.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Peckover House and Garden (12.4 kilometres)
  • Oxburgh Hall (24.0 kilometres)
