  • Stay in an organic apple orchard 10 miles from Cambridge city centre
  • A 30-minute drive from the National Trust's oldest nature reserve
  • Top spot for stargazing: barbecues and campfires encouraged
Expect a sweet time when you stay at Fen End Farm, for here you shall stay on an organic farm with its own apple orchard a few minutes’ drive from Cambridge. That orchard is a top spot for playing hide and seek with the kids by day, and also for stargazing by night – barbecues and campfires are encouraged on site, so pull a log up to the fire and turn your sights skyward. As its name suggests, Fen End Farm is on the edge of the famed Fens: it's a haven for outdoorsy types and wildlife watchers too, as the oldest nature reserve under the National Trust, the Wicken National Nature Reserve, is nearby. The site and its surrounding 117 acres of farmland also have a sky-high birdlife rating, so keep an eye out for barn owls, lapwings and skylarks… and if birdwatching doesn’t give you wings, there’s a woodland on site for gentle roaming. The site's Apple Hut has cooking and washing-up facilities; the on-site shower shack has a hot water shower and swish eco compost toilets, and there's a parent and baby washroom too. Fen End Farm is two miles from its local village of Cottenham, where there are restaurants and pubs, and local produce is available on site. Cambridge's historic colleges, waterways and museums can be easily pedalled to along good local bike paths.

Cuckoo bell tent

Liked: Absolutely delightful campsite. Perfect way to wrap up the summer. Kitchen hut and bathroom facilities just added to the ease of a late summer camping trip. Totally recommend it. And don't forget to try their produce either. You'll be hard pushed to find better apple juice or cider.

Wren bell tent

Liked: The ambience of the place - set in an orchard, all spotlessly clean, great but simple facilities, homemade sausages, cider and apple juice. Fun to cook over an open fire.

Disliked: Slight noise from wind turbine

From the manager: Thanks for your review, we're so glad you liked our place :). We're always happy to turn off the wind turbine if it's bothering people.

Wren bell tent

Liked: Lovely location, the tents are amongst the apple trees; excellent facilities, kitchen with cookware to borrow, access to a fridge, kettles and toaster. Great shower and toilet facilities. The hosts were super helpful and have thought of everything you may need while camping. Fantastic bell tent with lots of space outside for bbq. We walked around the farm, some beautiful walks - we saw cows, horses, chicken etc. Great location with lots to do nearby, we went to the aqua park and canoeing and the children loved it. Highly recommend and we will be definitely coming back!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for taking the time to review Nikolaos, we look forward to welcoming you back sometime! :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is one of the best campsites I have stayed at. Clean, quiet, in a mature orchard and surrounded by fields. A warm room is available with sinks etc if it rains. Educated people run this site.

Disliked: Problem is the distance to the road.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely words Simon.

Local attractions

Whether it's punting on the Cam or sipping an ale at its bankside pubs, you’ll not be bored on a day trip to Cambridge: check out the colleges, the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Museum of Cambridge, then climb the (many) steps of Great St Mary's to see the town from above. Less than 30 minutes’ drive from Fen End Farm is the city of Ely, home to Ely Cathedral and its famed 14th-century octagonal lantern tower. If you only have time to do two things in Ely, make the cathedral one of them; the other should be a trip to Oliver Cromwell's House, the controversial one's farmhouse home now refurbished to show how it might have looked in Cromwellian times. Fen End Farm is 20 minutes from the Wicken National Nature Reserve for spotting hen harriers or water voles hiding out in the meadows and reedbeds of its 627-acre expanse. This has been a wildlife haven for aeons: Charles Darwin collected beetles here in the 1820s, and Cambridge boffins have published hundreds of papers throughout the decades on its wildlife. If you're equestrian-minded, gallop over to the National Stud (a 30-minute drive away) for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of thoroughbred breeding. Wimpole Farm is within half an hour’s drive too – this is a rare breed centre, set amid an 18th-century and modern farmyard.
