General

  • Stay in an organic apple orchard 10 miles from Cambridge city centre
  • 30 minutes from the National Trust's oldest nature reserve
  • Top spot for stargazing

Expect a sweet time when you stay at Fen End Farm, an organic farm and apple orchard less than 10 miles from the Cambridge city centre. It's just two miles from its local village of Cottenham, where there are a number of restaurants and pubs.

As its name suggests, Fen End Farms is found on the edge of the famous Fens. The area is a paradise for outdoorsy types, with the oldest nature reserve under the National Trust, the Wicken National Nature Reserve, 12 miles away. Good cycle paths link the site to Cambridge and its historic colleges, bridges and museums.

The site and its surrounding 117 acres of farmland are havens for birdlife, so keep an eye out for barn owls, lapwings and skylarks. If birdwatching doesn’t give you wings, there is a young woodland on site which is great for explorations.

The orchard is also a top spot for stargazing and campfires are encouraged on site, so pull a log up to the fire and turn your sights skyward.

Guests at Fen End Farm have shared use of the Apple Hut with cooking and washing-up facilities. The on-site shower shack has a hot water shower and posh eco compost toilets.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Directions

Please drive very slowly in the yard as there are horses, dogs and children on-site.

Drive down between the two large barns and parking is in a grass field just past the large poplar trees and opposite a large hay barn.

The orchard entrance is just past the hay barn, on the left. Please either knock at the house, or call or text, and we’ll come to show you around.

Local attractions

The university city of Cambridge is known world-over as a seat of learning, but the city and the area surrounding it have no shortage of activities away from the lecture halls.

Less than 30 minutes’ drive from Fen End Farm is the city of Ely, home to the spectacular Ely Cathedral and its famed Octagon Tower. If you only have time to do two things in Ely, make the cathedral one. The other should be a trip to Oliver Cromwell's house – a good stop for the whole family.

For those who want to stick to the countryside, Fen End Farm is 12 miles from the Wicken National Nature Reserve, the National Trust’s oldest nature reserve. See if you can spot hen harriers or water voles hiding out in the meadows and reedbeds.

If you're equestrian-minded, gallop the 17 miles to the National Stud to get a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes on there.

Also nearby are Anglesey Abbey and Wimpole Farm, both within half an hour’s drive.
