  • Stay in an organic apple orchard 10 miles from Cambridge city centre
  • A 30-minute drive from the National Trust's oldest nature reserve
  • Top spot for stargazing: barbecues and campfires encouraged
Expect a sweet time when you stay at Fen End Farm, for here you shall stay on an organic farm with its own apple orchard, a few minutes’ drive from Cambridge. That orchard is a top spot for playing hide and seek with the kids by day, and also for stargazing by night – barbecues and campfires are encouraged on site, so pull a log up to the fire and turn your sights skyward. As its name suggests, Fen End Farm is on the edge of the famed Fens: it's a haven for outdoorsy types and wildlife watchers too, as the oldest nature reserve under the National Trust, Wicken Fen Nature Reserve, is nearby. The site and its surrounding 117 acres of farmland also have a sky-high birdlife rating, so keep an eye out for barn owls, lapwings and skylarks… and if birdwatching doesn’t give you wings, there’s a woodland on site for gentle roaming. The site's Apple Hut has washing-up facilities and electric kettles; the on-site shower shack has a hot-water shower and swish eco compost toilets, and there's a parent and baby washroom too. Fen End Farm is two miles from its local village of Cottenham, where there are restaurants and pubs, and local produce is available on site. Cambridge's historic colleges, waterways and museums can be easily pedalled to along good local bike paths.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked This is a very special camp site. The individual pitches are separated by trees in the apple orchard. Good facilities. Great atmosphere.

The wheelbarrows offered to take equipment from car park to pitch are large and easy to handle.

We're looking forward to returning as soon as we can!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked What a wonderful campsite. Everything thought out really well. Excellent toilet/shower facilities. Really clean and loads of hot water. Didn’t use the kitchen but it looked good. Great check in. Lovely pitches, spaced apart really cleverly in the orchard.

Disliked Nothing to dislike! We would 1000% stay again.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Loved having my own private pitch nestled within the Apple trees. Also loved that everything was solar or wind powered and the composting toilets worked well too. It was a great find and would like to visit again. Great for cycling into Cambridge and yet being out in countryside.

Disliked The road/lane up to the farm was a bit bumpy and I was worried where I was heading at first but worries all disappeared as soon as I arrived and met the host and walked through the apple orchard .

Wren bell tent

Liked Fen end Farm is a wonderful orchard to camp in. We stayed for 2 nights in one of the bell tents. The high grass, the firepit, the appletrees, all makes it a very secluded and private campside. Great facilities! Will definitely come back!

Please drive very slowly in the yard as there are horses, dogs and children on-site. Drive down between the two large barns and parking is in a grass field just past the large poplar trees and opposite a large hay barn. The orchard entrance is just past the hay barn, on the left. Please either knock at the house, or call or text, and we’ll come to show you around.

Local attractions

Whether it's punting on the Cam or sipping an ale at its bankside pubs, you’ll not be bored on a day trip to Cambridge: check out the colleges, the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Museum of Cambridge, then climb the (many) steps of Great St Mary's to see the town from above. Less than 30 minutes’ drive from Fen End Farm is the city of Ely, home to Ely Cathedral and its famed 14th-century octagonal lantern tower. If you only have time to do two things in Ely, make the cathedral one of them; the other should be a trip to Oliver Cromwell's House, the controversial one's farmhouse home now refurbished to show how it might have looked in Cromwellian times. Fen End Farm is 20 minutes from Wicken Fen Nature Reserve for spotting hen harriers or water voles hiding out in the meadows and reedbeds of its 627-acre expanse. This has been a wildlife haven for aeons: Charles Darwin collected beetles here in the 1820s, and Cambridge boffins have published hundreds of papers throughout the decades on its wildlife. If you're equestrian-minded, gallop over to the National Stud (a 30-minute drive away) for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of thoroughbred breeding. Wimpole Home Farm is within half an hour’s drive too – this is a rare breed centre, set amid an 18th-century and modern farmyard.
