General

  • Stay in an organic apple orchard 10 miles from Cambridge city centre
  • A 30-minute drive from the National Trust's oldest nature reserve
  • Top spot for stargazing: barbecues and campfires encouraged

Expect a sweet time when you stay at Fen End Farm, an organic farm and apple orchard a few minutes’ drive from Cambridge – good cycle paths also link the site to the city’s historic colleges, bridges and museums. The orchard is a top spot for playing hide and seek with the kids, and also for stargazing – barbecues and campfires are encouraged on site, so pull a log up to the fire and turn your sights skyward.

As its name suggests, Fen End Farms is on the edge of the famed Fens: it's a haven for outdoorsy types and wildlife watchers too, as the oldest nature reserve under the National Trust, the Wicken National Nature Reserve, is nearby. The site and its surrounding 117 acres of farmland also have a sky-high birdlife rating, so keep an eye out for barn owls, lapwings and skylarks... and if birdwatching doesn’t give you wings, there’s a woodland on site for gentle roaming.

The site's Apple Hut has cooking and washing-up facilities; the on-site shower shack has a hot water shower and swish eco compost toilets, and there's a parent and baby washroom to hand too.

Fen End Farm is two miles from its local village of Cottenham, where there are restaurants and pubs. Local produce is available on site.

Bell tent secure despite strong winds, lovely area to sit and around the fire outside the tent and felt private as plenty of apples trees around each pitch. The staff were extremely friendly and the whole campsite had a really nice atmosphere.

    Disliked:

There is only 1 shower, which is fine but it did mean there was a bit of a queue in the mornings.

Great shared kitchen area, lovely orchard setting gives a private feel, very friendly, lovely and small, children loved the chickens and horses and seeing a plane take off on the air strip was the icing on the cake! The children also loved making lollies with the apple juice from the farm with the reusable lollie pouches - a really nice touch.

What a wonderful campsite. We stayed during a beautiful weekend in September and to camp in the abundant apple orchard was a pure joy. The site is really well run with great facilities and a really lovely relaxed atmosphere. I loved the commitment to the environment that is at the core of the site and it has made me think about how I can be more aware of this at home too. We will definitely be back.

A great place to visit. Orchard provided privacy while at the same time lots of places for kids to play hide and seek. Kids loved having the experience of the firepit. It felt like a really successful mix of eco-friendly (compost toilets) while maintaining cleanliness - the lovely warm shower was a bonus. The summer house with fridges and washing up facilities was really useful and we spent a rainy hour sitting reading and knitting at the table rather than huddled under canvas. The owners were around regularly and I felt they took great care in the campsite as well as being open to questions about the ecology for me and the chippie plane for my husband.

Directions

Please drive very slowly in the yard as there are horses, dogs and children on-site.

Drive down between the two large barns and parking is in a grass field just past the large poplar trees and opposite a large hay barn.

The orchard entrance is just past the hay barn, on the left. Please either knock at the house, or call or text, and we’ll come to show you around.

Local attractions

Whether punting on the Cam or sipping an ale at its bankside pubs, you’ll not be bored on a day trip to Cambridge: check out the colleges, the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Museum of Cambridge, then climb the (many) steps of Great St Mary's to see the town from above.

Less than 30 minutes’ drive from Fen End Farm is the city of Ely, home to Ely Cathedral and its famed 14th-century octagonal lantern tower (if you only have time to do two things in Ely, make the cathedral one of them). The other should be a trip to Oliver Cromwell's House, the controversial one's farmhouse home now refurbished to show how it might have looked in Cromwellian times.

Fen End Farm is 20 minutes from the Wicken National Nature Reserve for spotting hen harriers or water voles hiding out in the meadows and reedbeds of its 627-acre expanse. This has been a wildlife haven for aeons: Charles Darwin collected beetles here in the 1820s, and Cambridge boffins have published hundreds of papers throughout the decades on its wildlife.

If you're equestrian-minded, gallop over to the National Stud (a 30-minute drive away) to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of thoroughbred breeding. Wimpole Farm is within half an hour’s drive too – this is a rare breed centre, set amid an 18th-century and modern farmyard.

Must see

  • Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill (7.2 miles)
