  • Simple rural site in Staffordshire, on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 10-minute drive from Alton Towers and 20 minutes from Dovedale
  • Football and volleyball nets; lots of space; a minute from the pub
Family rift? One lot wants rides and slides and attractions, the others long for walks in the wilderness and watery outdoors stuff? Reconcile all warring parties at Rue Hill Campsite, a simple and friendly site in the Staffordshire countryside, where (almost) every wish can be granted. This special spot is surrounded by green fields on the edge of the Peak District, a minute’s drive from the village of Cauldon Low and about 10 minutes’ drive from Alton Towers. Space is the word here: there’s a wide grassy field to stay in with plenty of room for running about at full pelt too, as well as more organised activities around the football and volleyball nets. Barbecues are welcome; hire firepits with logs, sticks and paper from the team for the simple pleasures of gathering round the flames, warming fingers, sizzling things on sticks or singing lusty songs (reasonably quietly). It’s a minute’s drive to a pub with food and 15 minutes to a nicely varied selection of shops, supermarkets, takeaways and other eateries at Ashbourne.

Liked As a family we are going camping quite often. This campsite is our favourite so far. We were looked after, the host was helpful and friendly, place itself was better than described. We all loved it there.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We were welcomed on arrival and the lady and gentleman were very friendly. They gave us information on local attractions and places to visit.

It wasn't overly busy on the site for the tent pitching so we were lucky to get the corner plot (naughty corner as the lady put it, which made me chuckle 😆).

The toilets were great, everything you needed and they also had showers which were great.

You can order a fire pit with all the wood etc for £10 but it was quite a sunny warm day and didn't bother.

There were washing up facilities, waste facilities all adequate for what you need.

Ground was level which we liked and grass kept short.

We will return at some point for sure.

Disliked Nothing really, it's set back from a road but quiet at night.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Hosts were super lovely, very informative and very welcoming.

Site was well set out with a separate adults area on the grass (I was with my son on a visit to Alton Towers), which made for a quieter area were we were situated in the hard standing area. However they didn’t seem to rowdy. The site was 10 minutes drive from the parking at Alton Towers which was a welcome short journey at the end if a long day at Alton towers completely walked and adrenalined out. Toilets were lovely and clean. We are self contained so didn’t use the showers but they looked decent.
There were a fair few hungry horse flies about so remember your bug spray.

Disliked The hard standings with electric hook up back on to the road. We live in quite a rural area with very little through traffic so are use to quieter roads. It did quieten down over night but this may bother some people.
