General

  • Simple rural site in Staffordshire, on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 10-minute drive from Alton Towers and 20 minutes from Dovedale
  • Football and volleyball nets; lots of space; a minute from the pub

Family rift? One lot wants rides and slides and attractions, the others long for walks in the wilderness and watery outdoors stuff? Reconcile all warring parties at Rue Hill Campsite, a simple and friendly site in the Staffordshire countryside, where (almost) every wish can be granted.

This special spot is surrounded by green fields on the edge of the Peak District, a minute’s drive from the village of Cauldon Low and about 10 minutes’ drive from Alton Towers. Space is the word here: there’s a wide grassy field to stay in with plenty of room for running about at full pelt too, as well as more organised activities around the football and volleyball nets.

Barbecues are welcome; hire firepits with logs, sticks and paper from the team for the simple pleasures of gathering round the flames, warming fingers, sizzling things on sticks or singing lusty songs (reasonably quietly).

It’s a minute’s drive to a pub with food and 15 minutes to a nicely varied selection of shops, supermarkets, takeaways and other eateries at Ashbourne.

New toilet block- auto lights and piped in radio! Nice warm water and good pressure showers. Lovely host who greeted us, gave us a map and talked through local area. Fire pit available to hire for £10 with kindling and logs, great for toasted marshmallows!

    Disliked:

Campsite on a slight slope, but not too bad as lots of level spots.
    Terrible weather for us ;)

The site is lovely, spacious and safe for children to have freedom to explore. The picnic benches and stone circles for firepits are a nice touch, and the toilet and shower block has everything you need and is clean. The owner is lovely and the location of the site is perfect for families. The views onsite are beautiful.
There are shops 15 minutes away which is handy if you forget anything, and there are plenty of pubs for food if you fancy a treat. This was perfect for our little boy's first camping trip, with the experience of camping alongside the convenience of home comforts if needed.

Plenty of space. No tent size limit. Able to choose where we wanted to pitch. Friendly and helpful owner. Nice new clean toilet and shower block.

    Disliked:

Very exposed to wind. Very little shelter although there are small trees which have been planted which in a few years will provide some wind shelter.

Local attractions

For those who like to be hurtled about at great speeds and heights, happiness awaits: it’s 10 minutes to the assorted excitements of Alton Towers, and for those who haven't quite graduated to the big league, an array of rides aimed at younger clientele are at Gulliver’s Kingdom, 40 minutes away.

For active stuff in the outdoors, make for the Dovedale valley, 20 minutes away for walks and rides through the fab surrounds of the southern Peak District. If you prefer a splash of water with your adventures, wend your way over to Carsington Water (25 minutes) for kayaking, sailing and fishing as well as walks and bike rides round the reservoir. For more urban antics, meanwhile, sidle over to Stoke Skatepark (40 minutes), a mecca for concrete acrobats.

Penchant for the past? The Churnet Valley Steam Railway is 10 minutes' drive away, while the fine old stately piles of Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House are within 45 minutes. It's a similar distance to the Crich Tramway Museum and the Heights of Abraham, a Victorian pleasure ground reached by cable car from Matlock Bath, with a fossil museum, caverns and acres of upland parkland.

For animal fans, there’s horse trekking from the Beaver Hall equestrian centre, 10 minutes away, and very close by, encounters with lemurs, penguins, wallabies and pygmy goats at the Peak Wildlife Park.
