  • Simple rural site in Staffordshire, on the edge of the Peak District
  • A 10-minute drive from Alton Towers and 20 minutes from Dovedale
  • Football and volleyball nets; lots of space; a minute from the pub
Family rift? One lot wants rides and slides and attractions, the others long for walks in the wilderness and watery outdoors stuff? Reconcile all warring parties at Rue Hill Campsite, a simple and friendly site in the Staffordshire countryside, where (almost) every wish can be granted. This special spot is surrounded by green fields on the edge of the Peak District, a minute’s drive from the village of Cauldon Low and about 10 minutes’ drive from Alton Towers. Space is the word here: there’s a wide grassy field to stay in with plenty of room for running about at full pelt too, as well as more organised activities around the football and volleyball nets. Barbecues are welcome; hire firepits with logs, sticks and paper from the team for the simple pleasures of gathering round the flames, warming fingers, sizzling things on sticks or singing lusty songs (reasonably quietly). It’s a minute’s drive to a pub with food and 15 minutes to a nicely varied selection of shops, supermarkets, takeaways and other eateries at Ashbourne.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Great views, lots of football goals and volley ball nets and plenty of picnic benches with metal in middle for BBQ's. Amazing view and the distant sound of sheep gives this place a very countryside feel. There is even a decent Pizza / Burger place available on Uber Eats for delivery direct to the site.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked I love this site. Due to a weather warning in place the owners put us on hard standing, as the grass had been saturated and the storm was likely to bring more, so rather than risk ruining their field and having to drag any stuck vehicles, we were upgraded.

Good cleans toilets and shower block, washing up area and waste water disposal too. Recycling bins were at the back of the shower block.

Excellent views, plenty of walking from site, plenty to explore nearby, such as Leek and Cheadle, lakes Rudyard, Carsington to kayak on, and National Trust sites Ilam and Dovedale stepping stones.
This sites makes an excellent base. Also dog friendly!!!

Disliked This is probably me, as showers are never warm enough for me, plenty of pressure, free to use, so shouldn't grumble.

Local attractions

For those who like to be hurtled about at great speeds and heights, happiness awaits: it’s 10 minutes to the assorted excitements of Alton Towers, and for those who haven't quite graduated to the big league, an array of rides aimed at younger clientele are at Gulliver’s Kingdom, 40 minutes away. For active stuff in the outdoors, make for the Dovedale valley, 20 minutes away for walks and rides through the fab surrounds of the southern Peak District. If you prefer a splash of water with your adventures, wend your way over to Carsington Water (25 minutes) for kayaking, sailing and fishing as well as walks and bike rides round the reservoir. For more urban antics, meanwhile, sidle over to Stoke Skatepark (40 minutes), a mecca for concrete acrobats. Penchant for the past? The Churnet Valley Steam Railway is 10 minutes' drive away, while the fine old stately piles of Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House are within 45 minutes. It's a similar distance to the Crich Tramway Museum and the Heights of Abraham, a Victorian pleasure ground reached by cable car from Matlock Bath, with a fossil museum, caverns and acres of upland parkland. For animal fans, there’s horse trekking from the Beaver Hall equestrian centre, 10 minutes away, and very close by, encounters with lemurs, penguins, wallabies and pygmy goats at the Peak Wildlife Park.
