A small friendly campsite
Well-kept outdoor area

  • Small, peaceful site with outstanding scenery in a countryside setting
  • Spacious pitches a 20-minute drive from the Meres
  • Afternoon teas and pizzas available on site; barbecues permitted
Fancy some outstanding scenery? Then pull on your boots and make your way towards Abbey Green Farm, a peaceful site in the unchanging Shropshire countryside. The spacious pitches welcome well-behaved dogs (kept on a short lead due to the livestock) and have access to excellent, clean facilities including a shared under-cover seating area. Adding to the stillness of the countryside, the well-tended and classically English gardens attract a variety of birds and insects to the site: how about taking it all in over afternoon tea served on your pitch as you admire the Shropshire countryside…? Other foodie options include afternoon teas and farmhouse pizzas – again served to your pitch and freshly made to order. If you have an urge for DIY dining, barbecues are allowed on site and there are shops and supermarkets in nearby Wem and Whitchurch, 10 and 20 minutes’ drive away. Alternatively, get your best tweed knickerbockers on and walk the two miles to a pub for local ales and hot fresh food.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, quiet, and scenic campsite with exceptional, spotlessly clean facilities, particularly noted for its modern bathrooms. Owners Rose and Philip are frequently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness. The site offers excellent food options, including homemade pizzas and breakfast sandwiches, delivered to pitches. Some guests found the narrow country lanes leading to the site challenging, and a few suggested more facilities for children. A limited number of grass pitches experienced waterlogging after heavy rain.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring caravan pitch

Liked The location is peaceful and beautiful, a very much needed contrast to busy Manchester where we live.
The owners are friendly and welcoming.
The pitches are a good size and offer a good level of privacy.

Disliked We visited during a busy bank holiday and the only issue we faced was the shower pressure and the water turning cold. That being said, we were pretty much the only people left on our last morning and the shower I had then was fine.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (XL)

Liked Simple, family run and well equipped site with a few games available for use.

Little touches in the bathrooms such as the hand towels and soap included. Good WiFi speed

Disliked Pitch was poorly outlined resulting in tent being squashed into the end of the pitch to allow others to drive/walk through (plenty of unkept grass which we were later told was for driving across however newer cars do not allow driving through long grass due to safety sensors. Grass could have easily been maintained to the same standards as the pitch to form a clear road/walkway for access)

Water pressure very low making the showers basically unusable if others site users were awake.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback and for highlighting the family feel of the site, our facilities, and the little touches in the shower rooms, we are pleased these were appreciated.
We’re sorry to hear the pitch layout did not quite suit your set-up. The grassed area you mention is part of our hay meadow, which we grow to provide winter feed for our sheep, so it is intentionally left longer at certain times of year. That said, we completely appreciate your comments regarding access for newer vehicles with sensors and will be widening the passing area to make this easier in future, thank you for bringing this to our attention.
We would also like to clarify that our showers are individually heated power showers, designed to provide consistent hot water and pressure throughout the day, though we are sorry if this was not your experience during your stay.
Thank you again for staying with us and for your helpful feedback.
Best wishes,
Rose

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (XL)

Liked Camped here for 3 nights. Good sized pitches but not very clear down the side and set up so other campers need to walk and drive through your pitch so not ideal. 3 showers and 4 toilets but be aware that this site is not set up to be busy, cold showers every day and very little water pressure unless you get up at 6:30am. I would stay away from the food offered. Average ice cream and chips were mostly raw. Was going to try the pizza but didn't want to risk it also being raw. Rose was a lovely host but Philip was confrontational and rude definitely should not be working with the public. Good location but wouldn't stay here again.

Disliked Food offered - took a long time and not cooked. Philip was rude. Pitch size down the side of the buildings confusing and secure due to other campers driving through was not safe for the dogs.

From the manager: Dear Lewis,
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We’re pleased you enjoyed the location and appreciated the welcome from Rose.
We’re sorry to hear that aspects of your stay did not meet expectations. As a small, family-run countryside site, we work hard to create a peaceful, safe and enjoyable environment for all guests. This does mean that, on occasion, we do need to politely reinforce site rules, particularly around safety and consideration for other, and whilst we always aim to be friendly and helpful, we appreciate that a firm approach can sometimes be interpreted differently.

We would also like to clarify that our showers are individually heated power showers, designed to provide consistent hot water and pressure throughout the day. We were disappointed to read your comments regarding the food, as everything is freshly prepared to order and many guests return specifically for our pizzas, breakfasts and homemade treats. Had any concerns been raised during your stay, we would always have welcomed the opportunity to put things right.

We genuinely care about our guests’ experiences and are always approachable should any issues arise during a stay.

Best wishes from us both,
Rose & Philip

Non-electric grass tent pitch (small, two person)

Liked Owners were lovely, facilities were really good and clean

Disliked Our pitch wasn’t the best there were quite a few nettles so we couldn’t wear sandals on the grass
The food was slightly overpriced but was good food
The lanes to get in were quite tight which granted isn’t the owners fault but we weren’t expecting it!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring caravan pitch

Liked It was local to places to visit and walks.
Showers were good and clean, well kept place.

Disliked Small and not suitable for towing a caravan- small plot, about 1 metre away from the tent next to us. Roads were also not suitable for caravans locally.
Had to ask where the waste pipe, water etc was as they were busy serving ordered take aways.
Site was advertised as a quiet site although there was a big party in tents and kids were kicking the ball everywhere and it states that at 10 it should be quiet but the group were loud until 11 and nothing was said to them, luckily it rained the next evening so it was quiet as it states.
Electric kept tripping using just the airfryer.
Shame we had this review but we expected quiet and we didn't get it, we also left a day earlier due to the big group (4*8berths) and we wanted sleep!

Local attractions

Whixall Nature Reserve, a 20-minute drive away, is one of the last few lowland raised bogs left in the British Isles and as such it’s home to a menagerie of birdlife along with some rather prehistoric sights, such as carnivorous sundew, adders (wear your boots) and six-inch water-skating raft spiders. The nearby Meres – lakes and wetlands formed at the end of the Ice Age – are all between 20 and 25 minutes away and make for fine walks and nature spotting: birdwatchers come from all over the country to Wood Lane Nature Reserve, next to Ellesmere, to spot avocets, lapwings and sandpipers. It's around an hour to the Shropshire Hills' Carding Mill Valley for yomps up heather-blanketed slopes, waterfalls and views towards the Black Mountains. Alternatively, report to Llangollen (45 minutes) for rides on the steam railway and down the canal, and it's a similar distance to walk the ‘stream in the sky’, otherwise known as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. If you’re more into country houses, visit the eccentric tangle of statues, grottoes, bridges and tunnels created by various owners of Hawkstone Park Follies (15 minutes), or wander the 640 acres of country surrounding 18th-century Attingham Park, dotted with Iron Age and Roman ruins, half an hour away.
