Abbey Green Farm: Luxury camping!

General

  • Small peaceful site with vintage English vibe
  • A 20-minute drive from the Meres and 45 minutes from Wenlock Edge
  • Vintage bikes for hire; afternoon teas and barbecues allowed

Fancy a vintage voyage? Then pull on your gaiters, set your pipe firmly between your teeth and pedal off towards Abbey Green Farm, a peaceful site in the unchanging Shropshire countryside: they’ll even rent you a 1940s bicycle so you can explore it in proper style.

Adding to the stillness, the well-tended and classically English gardens attract a variety of birds and insects to the site: how about taking it all in over afternoon tea, served on the farm terrace surrounded by Shropshire countryside...?

Other foodie options include breakfasts or bacon and egg rolls for guests every morning, and the opportunity to buy luxury hampers full of tasty treats. If you have an urge for DIY dining, barbecues are allowed on site and there are shops and supermarkets in nearby Wem and Whitchurch, 10 and 20 minutes’ drive away. Alternatively, get your best tweed knickerbockers on and cycle the two miles to the Bull and Dog pub for local ales and hot fresh food.

Please note

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

Group bookings of 5 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

All campers must bring their own electric hook-up leads.

Only eco-friendly toilet chemicals are accepted.

Fabulous small family run site in the countryside.06/14/2021

Lovely small site for my first caravan outing. Great location for day tips to interesting places close by, ideally situated for local walks, cycling, canals, and pubs not too far away too. The owners have worked very hard to make this a very welcoming and pretty site and are swift to reply to queries ahead of arrival. They have cream teas, breakfast baps and home made pizza's available for delivery right to your pitch, cycles for hire, pretty good Wi-Fi - and the toilet block is very clean with washing up facilities too. I would definatley return here (especially for the friendly farm cats) and would strongly recommend you give them a go!

It is that kind of place you go to rest and relax, enjoy the sunset/sunrise and nature. I was blessed by an stunning weather. I couldn't ask for anything better. The hosts are good people, very kind and gentle. We had very good conversations which add a special touch.
The toilets were always clean, the whole place is kept tidy and neat. The place is small, cozy. Perfect to relax.
My top 1 favorite thing is certainly the customer service. For me it was perfect. Just to examplify the kind of people they are, I arrived by bike and I forgot to buy a bottle of wine to enjoy the sunset. Since I was exausted to go to the closest grocery shop, they offered me to buy a bottle of wine from their personal wine cellar. That was incredible! So I was able to relax and enjoy the sunset while drinking a good wine after a long and exausted journey to there.
Oh, and I highly recommend that "something cream" (sorry, I can't remember the name :-D)? It's simply delicious!

    Disliked:

The wifi was not working when I tried to connect (I only tried once). But this was not a problem as my 4G worked perfectly there. But hey, the idea is go there to disconnect, isn't?

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments Gleidson.
We hope you get chance out of your busy life to visit us again in the future.
The 'something cream' was a cream tea. By the way...your English is very good....You've been practicing!

Beautiful campsite, small and cosy with well kept facilities and a very friendly and helpful owner and all the campers were well behaved!
I camped with a 4yr old and it was safe for him to roam (to some extent!) and be seen from the tent wherever he went, all the kids of different ages played really well together, again the play area could be seen from the pitch. We will definitely be coming back.

It's great to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. Yes, I agree - all the children who stay with us play really well together and because our site is small it's so much friendlier than the bigger sites !
Thank you so much for taking time to leave us your review.

The owners were really helpful and friendly, even helping us find a garage for some unexpected repairs.
Have stayed here twice already and would not hesitate to return, highly recommend a visit.

Local attractions

Whixall Nature Reserve a 20-minute drive away is one of the last few lowland raised bogs left in the British Isles and as such it’s home to a menagerie of birdlife along with some rather prehistoric sights, such as carnivorous sundew, adders (wear your boots) and six-inch water-skating raft spiders.

The nearby Meres, lakes and wetlands formed at the end of the Ice Age are all between 20 and 25 minutes away and make for fine walks and nature spotting: birdwatchers come from all over the country to Wood Lane Nature Reserve, next to Ellesmere to spot avocets, lapwings and sandpipers.

For bigger walks and climbs, it’s 45 minutes to Wenlock Edge, where you can also add a spot of Segway, quad biking and zipwire traversing to your hiking itinerary, and around an hour to the Shropshire Hills' Carding Mill Valley, for yomps up heather-blanketed slopes, waterfalls and views towards the Black Mountains.

Alternatively, report to Llangollen (45 minutes) for rides on the steam railway and down the canal, and it's a similar distance to walk the ‘stream in the sky’, otherwise known as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. If you’re more into country piles, visit the eccentric tangle of statues, grottoes, bridges and tunnels created by various owners of Hawkstone Park Follies (15 minutes), or wander the 640 acres of country surrounding 18th-century Attingham Park, dotted with Iron Age and Roman ruins, half an hour away.

Must see

  • Darby Houses (Ironbridge) (32.4 kilometres)
  • Blists Hill Victorian Town (32.8 kilometres)
  • Ironbridge Gorge Museums (33.7 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Attingham Park (23.8 kilometres)
