  • Family-run Oxfordshire site at a smallholding with art studios
  • Didcot and Wantage 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Oxford
  • On the edge of the North Wessex Downs, with great walks nearby
Off to Oxfordshire for fresh air, bike rides, rural walks and… a bit of pottery? Muster Point Campsite is part of a family-run three-acre smallholding that’s also home to an arts studio running pottery classes and art workshops. That makes this a particularly handy place to stay if you’re signing up for one of the courses or workshops at Oxfordshire Arts – but you don’t have to be arty in the slightest to appreciate a stay here. It’s also an excellent location for those seeking out walks and bike rides – it’s just on the edge of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape and both the Icknield Way and Ridgeway are close by for long-distance outings or shorter stints. Equally easy are outings to Oxford, which is about half an hour away by car (and best approached by using one of the Park & Ride services). Closer by are Wantage (the birthplace of King Alfred the Great) and Didcot (home of the Didcot Railway Centre) – both are about 10 minutes’ drive away and have a good collection of shops and places to eat, with an open-air market in Wantage too. Or maybe you’re after a country pub? There are plenty of those around too – you can walk or bike to Steventon or get in the car for Hendreds, Ardington and Letcombe Regis. Or perhaps an alfresco meal back on site? You’ll be allowed to bring a barbecue along, and there’s a great farm shop less than a mile away for fresh produce (and pick-your-own fruit in summer). Facilities in the camping paddock stretch to a kitchenette, a washing-up area and a purpose-built toilet block with a shower and two toilets.

What customers say

This is a well-maintained, friendly campsite with immaculate facilities, including a popular honesty shop selling local produce and treats. Pitches are flat and spacious. Guests appreciate the thoughtful touches and the peaceful atmosphere, though some mention occasional road noise and a potential bottleneck with limited shower facilities during peak times. Liked Lovely little campsite, the children loved the games field and watching the chickens. Beautiful view of the sunset. The family running the site were very good with the children. We had a lovely weekend!

Disliked Could do with an extra toilet and shower room - as it can be tricky to queue with little ones - but wasn't a major issue and it wouldn't stop us returning!

Liked Such a lovely little family run site, with all the basic amenities you need and a lovely little honesty shop (very well stocked!)
Perfectly clean and all in good order. Super easy check in. Access straight out to off road walking/farm tracks.
Added bonus to spend time with the chickens.
Lovely friendly family, so happy to chat and help with any questions, chicken related or otherwise!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely small campsite, clean good facilities, with orchard field for kids to use for games. Microwave and fridge for communal use.

Disliked Our only wish is that there was another shower. One wasn’t quite enough and caused queues some days.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Small and quiet, room for games. Pubs near by.

Disliked Sometimes the toilet block gave off a bad smell. Not about the campsite but we were walking and the quick road next to the campsite doesn't have a footpath.

Liked A very pleasant little site. I had a very warm welcome from the proprietor despite my very late arrival. The facilities were clean and well maintained. The cabins in which the coffee machine and snacks can be found were great. The site is within easy reach of Oxford.

Local attractions

Bring your bikes or boots – it’s about 3.5 miles to the Ridgeway, an ancient track that takes you towards the White Horse at Uffington, and you can pick up the similarly ancient Icknield Way close by too (pick it up a mile away in East Hendred for a good bike ride into Wantage on a recently resurfaced path). There are lots more trails to follow too, but if you’d like something different from your rural experience, perhaps take the kids to Millets Farm Centre (15 minutes’ drive) to meet cute animals, hire a boat in Abingdon (20 minutes) to pootle along the Thames or climb high into the trees at High Ropes Oxford (20 minutes). For other days out, the Didcot Railway Centre (15 minutes) is often a hit with train enthusiasts of all ages, and a trip into Oxford (half an hour) to see the historic colleges and try your hand at punting is a great choice too.
