  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets and four cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

What customers say

This back-to-basics campsite offers stunning countryside views, vast spacious pitches and a peaceful atmosphere, ideal for walkers. Facilities are clean but basic, with portaloos and cold showers being a common feature, though some guests experienced queues or found them less than ideal during busier periods. The ability to choose pitches and enjoy campfires is popular. Manager responses indicate improvements and a commitment to addressing guest feedback regarding facilities and noise.

Liked Good directions, all as described. Nice and flat, great views. Loos etc clean. Bins maintained

Disliked One of the site signage posts broken and on the ground, looked a bit sad.

From the manager: Thank you for the great review.

The signpost is on our list to repair this week.

Liked The space is fantastic and it is so peaceful watching the red kites flying around or the aircraft on their lessons. As the field is so big you can be as sociable as you want. Links to the walks are great - literally on your doorstep!
Cold water for dishes and showers (if it’s hot enough that’s lovely)

Disliked We arrived the day before the porta-loos were being emptied…whilst they were clean you could definitely tell they needed emptying!!
They were emptied whilst we were there and additional loos put in - if we’d arrived on that day we’d have given the site a 10

From the manager: Thanks Julie, annoyingly the portaloos should have been delivered weeks before but there was a problem at the supplier's end outside of our control.

Glad you enjoyed your stay though, we love the kites too :)

Peaceful, scenic and simple.

Non-electric grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This was my third stay at Ridgeview. I do like it here. It’s a lovely and peaceful place to camp. Flat pitches, very simple, right by the Ridgeway and other nice paths. Short walk to the King William IV pub. Good value. Decent phone signal if that matters to you.

Disliked The featured portaloos are not the nicest place to answer the call of nature. They are kept clean though. Weather during my stay was very hot so the cold water only showers were bearable. Some modest upgrades would greatly improve the experience i.e. compost loos and a solar panel to heat the showers.

From the manager: Thanks Simon, always good to have you with us.

We do explore alternative shower solutions. Last year we had a very nice gas setup but someone decided to trash it so we're a bit nervous to look at something else quite yet. Keep your eyes peeled though.

Liked Great big beautiful field with lovely vistas all around, lots of space.

Disliked Portaloos were in a bad shape, no toilet roll and no hand sanitiser. Sanitiser in particular looked as if it had been missing for a long time. As that's literally all I'm paying for besides bare land, that's responsible for the 7 missing stars.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're sorry the toilets were not up to standard. We have investigated and found there was a large cross over in the schedules as we were changing staff members after a sick break.

We always ask that if something isn't up to standard that guests get straight on the phone to us.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
