  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back-to-basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back-to-basics facilities, including portable toilets, three cold-water showers and one gas-heated shower. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome, and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm, there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Liked the informal feel of it: our visit didn’t feel “managed” or commercial or supervised, and yet everything was well planned and executed from check-in, fire pit and wood collection, instructions and expectations, check-out.
Everyone on site respected the rules on music, no cars and silence after 10.30pm, etc. so we could all just enjoy what we were there for - nature, the big skies, awesome views, and countryside peace and quiet. Wonderful!
Also liked that we were able to just book for a single night.

Disliked I would’ve liked to be able to bring our own raised fire pit and fuel. Having to buy this onsite was almost half the cost of the total visit.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Great venue well maintained - toilets were fine despite there being quite a few campers… I didn’t have a shower but they looked clean and usable. Very easy to find/get on to - very easy going campsite with mixed groups, but in our experience no loud groups or music, so very calm. Lovely views - spotted some hot air balloons in the distance.

Disliked We pre booked a fire pit kit but didn’t get any info about how to get it. Text the number it said to text but didn’t get anything back. Luckily some other people who bought some on the day got responses pretty quickly so we asked them for the code and showed them we had paid so were able to give the kids their marshmallows so all is well that ends well.

Unpowered grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked It is what it says on the tin!

Disliked Could some consideration be given to charging less for single people? I paid £22 for each night for the site but would have paid the same amount if there had been 4 of us. it seems unfair to single people, normally in a small tent.

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
