  • Peaceful rural site with panoramic views of the Chiltern Hills
  • On the Ridgeway Trail, less than 30 minutes from Oxford and Reading
  • Dog-friendly site; campfires permitted, with wood for sale
Disconnect from the world and plug in to nature at Ridgeway View Campsite, a spacious, back to basics site under 30 minutes by car from both Oxford and Reading. Generous pitches here are surrounded by Oxfordshire wheatfields with the Chiltern Hills beyond. This quiet site takes its name from the ancient trackway it backs onto. Now one of the UK’s popular National Trails, the Ridgeway 87-mile route is known as ‘Britain’s oldest road’ – walk here to follow in the footsteps of 5,000 years' worth of travellers. Less than a mile away, visitors can link up with the wildlife-rich Thames Path too. Also within walking distance (just far enough to build up an appetite for lunch) are several great pubs – plot your routes to take in the hostelries in Crowmarsh Gifford or Hailey. Something a bit more active in mind (or need to get some stress out)? Book a session at Ridgeway View's own axe-throwing range, which is a 15-minute drive away from the site. For stocking up on essentials, taking tea and cake or pottering around the shops, pop to the historic market town of Wallingford (five minutes’ drive), where you should also seek out the blue plaque for famed novelist Agatha Christie (British TV watchers may also recognise the area as the setting for Midsomer Murders). Half an hour’s drive to the north brings you to Oxford, and the same distance south is Reading. Guests have access to just a few back to basics facilities, including portable toilets and cold-water showers. Barbecues and campfires are permitted if raised off the ground – firewood is available to buy, and cooking slabs can be hired. Considerate dog owners are welcome and there’s plenty of space nearby for the canines to stretch their legs. On the farm there’s a no-noise policy at night past 10.30pm, so that everyone can enjoy a bit of rural peace.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We booked two pitches, one tent and one motorhome. We were a family plus teenage son's small group of friends. We went to the nearby activity site run by the same people first and had great fun with the shooting for son's birthday.
As for the campsite, we loved that there was so much space and we could choose where to pitch, with miles of space from others (and each other!) There was a large group booking in a designated area but we pitched far away and enjoyed the atmosphere from a distance, they did not trouble us at all.
The views are lovely and we enjoyed watching the sun go down. The site is basic with portaloos and cold water, no electricity etc but this was all as advertised and reflected in the price and we were only staying one night so barely needed the facilities. We loved the idea of having a campfire to hire on the pitch, although we had some rain which was a shame.
Remote check in by phone worked well, with good helpful communication. There was also a pizza van visiting, which we took advantage of so that made the teens happy!
Overall, the site was exactly what we wanted, a great, rustic bonding experience for the young people and real relaxation for us. 🙂

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Huge, open field with lovely views. Was able to choose my own pitch. Lots of well-serviced portaloos. Great pizza from Ben’s who visits on Saturdays from 5.30pm. Nice and close to Wallingford.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loads of space, clean loos, easy access from the Ridgeway (I was hiking it), showers (cold okay in winter)

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Helpful staff, lots of toilets, clean... best thing was great views, especially sunset

Disliked: It would be good if there was a system to buy more firewood, not just using the pre-made kits. Also obviously the cold water showers are not ideal.

Saved by access to national trail. Much better campsites elsewhere.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Ease of access to a ridgeway path. The view is alright.

Disliked: Porta loo toilets, how the toilets are in one spot -kinda far away. No hot water. Only 2 taps for drinking water for a huge campsite - queue to use them. Field is very exposed to wind and sun - super windy. A lot of cars. No facilities on site.

From the manager: We're so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay.

I'm not sure what may have happened if you missed our 4 water taps, one by the entrance, two near the loos with sinks, and one on the other side of the wood sheds. (They're marked on the site maps on the notice board). There's even a fifth tap behind the toilets as well to top up the hand washing basins.

As a pick your own pitch site the toilets are only as far away as the pitch you choose, so we definitely recommend choosing a pitch closer to the facilities if walking too far doesn't appeal or if proximity to the loos is important for your stay.

Our facilities are basic, but we don't pretend otherwise and we are very up front about the fact we only have portaloos and cold water. It sounds like you may have missed this information when booking. But to quote what is says in bold on our website:

"Please be aware before booking that we are a back to basics site, facilities on site are cold water showers and portaloo toilets, but for many this is the charm of the place, it is basic, but filled with gorgeous nature, with access to lovely walks and splendid views! But those who don’t take note of the basic nature of the facilities risk being surprised, hence we do recommend reading about the facilities before booking. This is back to basics no frills camping."

Local attractions

On a summer’s evening, there’s nothing quite like messing about on the river – hire a boat nearby at Wallingford Bridge or Benson Waterfront (both five minutes' drive). Sipping a glass of wine comes a close second, so Brightwell Vineyard (10 minutes) could be a good shout too. For wildlife enthusiasts, Cholsey Marsh Nature Reserve is 10 minutes away by car or a pleasant hour’s walk taking in the Thames Path along the river. And children (and quite possibly grownups) are bound to love a visit to Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes’ drive). To get the blood pumping, you could brave the local skydiving (five minutes) and watersports (15 minutes) centres.
