Boat Lane Caravan and Camping: Boats at Boat Lane

General

  • Peaceful Nottinghamshire park, a 10-minute walk from the River Trent
  • Half an hour's drive from Nottingham; 45 minutes from Sherwood Forest
  • Pubs with food, boat hire and fishing within 10 minutes' walk

Fancy a riverside retreat in Robin Hood country? Boat Lane Caravan and Camping has a berth for you. A 10-minute walk to the banks of the River Trent and a pair of popular pubs with grub, this site sits on a spot of prime Nottinghamshire countryside.

They keep things simple at Boat Lane, allowing you enjoy the peace of its spacious tree-lined meadow with minimum fuss. There are hot showers in the well-maintained washrooms, a washing-up area for your pots and pans and everyone has access to a communal fridge for perishables (or Prosecco...). There’s plenty of room for the kids to run about and a playground if you prefer them to stay in one place; dogs, like everyone else and barbecues, are welcome.

The owners recommend a 10-minute riverside walk to the pub at Fiskerton (three minutes by car), followed by a boat ride down and/or across the Trent. The Domesday Book records a ferry crossing here in the 11th-century, so why not make like a medieval in a rowing boat?

If you’d rather explore the waters without tiring yourself, make for Gunthorpe (quarter of an hour away) for a river cruise or take your rods to Bleasby lake (a mere three minutes away) for day permit fishing.

They started a bonfire which smoked out my camper so I was forced to move, the snack bar was not manned for most of my stay, you were expected to ring a bell to get someone to come and take your order and cook, I spoke to many people who said they did not like that arrangement

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback, we will certainly take your points into consideration regarding the snack bar. We are pleased you liked the upgrade to the shower and toilet block.

Thank you for your review. A real shame to see you wont be visiting us again but as discussed at the time and after a visit from a call out Electrician, due to the sheer demand over a Bank Holiday, far too many heaters and non-camping equipment were plugged in and had caused the power to trip, however we did our very best to rectify this. Unfortunately this can happen at camping sites when the weather drops in temperature causing more people to plug in more heaters than usual.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We will certainly take your points on board re the lights situation but most campers do come prepared with a torch and this is quite common as lights on site during the night can also be a distraction for people wanting to sleep. With regards to the toilet roll, we will ensure this is checked more frequently.

Everything... Honestly we couldn't even pitch up...
We arrived to a site full of campers literally on top of each other, which at the best of times isn't the best never mind during a pandemic. On arrival we were met by a few other campers who had no direction from anyone (other than other campers) on where we should be going or what we should be doing - the whole thing was a complete farce... Their was people literally pitching up, putting their tents up in the middle of nowhere which made getting our tourer around the site extremely difficult and very unsafe. After finally finding the owner, we were haphazardly pointed in the direction of a little patch of grass in which they wanted to place us in front of someone else's caravan, basically on their pitch space. We attempted to make the best of a bad situation, I got out to be meeted by dog poo everywhere and not a single electrical point as they were all taken. We just had to leave, this place is completely unsafe, I think it was more about money, money, money than safety and that's completely wrong. In the end we requested a refund and left, we then booked a lovely little caravan site up the road (which stuck to the guidance of COVID Regulations and the safety of their guests)... I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy, it was shocking!!

From the manager...

Wow, this was a very upsetting review to read. We had a fair few members of the team available on your arrival but due to the sheer volume of people arriving they may have been assisting other campers on check in so I can only apologise that a member of staff was not there to greet you. We have adhered by social distancing and with the correct distance between each camper so I am unsure which part this refers to and the first we have been aware of. We offered you a refund as did not want you to be unhappy and I can certainly confirm that it is not about money, money as you suggest. With regards to your point on the dog mess - this is purely the owners responsibility to pick their mess up and as much as we do inspections of the site every couple of hours, this can be hard to manage and we do expect dog owners to see the notices and use the dog bins provided.

Local attractions

A major hub since the days of Robin and his Merry Men, Nottingham (half an hour by car) still draws the crowds. Tour the castle and the caves, take a glass of ale in Ye Trip To Jerusalem (one of many contenders for the oldest pub in England crown), skate on ice at Motorpoint Arena and see how far law and order’s come since the Sheriff’s time in the National Justice Museum.

Sherwood Forest, three quarters of an hour away, harbours no brigands these days; within the nature reserve, country park and Sherwood Pines Forest Park you will find 450 acres of wildlife with among ancient oak trees and a wealth of biking and walking trails taking you through them. Traverse the tree-tops on ropes and wires at Go Ape, or let the kids loose on Robin Hood’s Hideout, an acclaimed natural play area; on your way back, call in at Ferry Farm Country Park a quarter of an hour from the site, to pet the pigs, feed the lambs, zoom about on go-karts and get adventurous on the adventure playground.

If the ancient forest’s fired you up about history, make for Newark (25 minutes) with its castle, National Civil War Centre and Air Museum. Or to feel as if you stepped back in time, take the 45-minute trip to Wollaton Hall, where herds of red and fallow deer roam round a lake in the grounds of a stately Elizabethan mansion.
