South Farm Caravan Park: The pods

General

  • Small family-run site among five acres of green Lincs countryside
  • A mile from Sutton on Sea and within walking distance of Huttoft beach
  • Next to a riding centre and 20 minutes' drive from Skegness

Well now, this is a popular little place. 'Fab', 'beautiful' and 'brilliant' are but of a few of the plaudits that have been heaped on small, family-run and friendly South Farm Caravan Park, set deep in the Lincolnshire countryside a mile from colourful Sutton on Sea.

Families, couples and solo travellers are all welcome here, and dogs would likely give the farm an approving woof too: a dog exercise field is on site, many walks are nearby along the countryside lanes and fields, and the walks – and bike rides – of the Lincolnshire Wolds are very close by. The closest beach, Huttoft or Moggs Eye, has miles of dog-friendly sands for the pooch to let loose.

If you think the kids would like to canter, riding lessons and a pony club are at the equestrian centre next door to the farm; if they tend more towards a seaside vibe, Skegness is about 20 minutes away. (And if after that you tend towards a gentler vibe, the long wide open sands of peaceful Huttoft beach are within walking distance of the farm.)

Facilities at the farm include spotless shower and toilet blocks and a washing-up area. And – something else the kids might like – free-range hens roam about and young guests are welcome to help collect the eggs at egg laying time.

Please note

A charge of £0.50 applies for the use of the shower.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Rental accommodation: electricity is not included in the rate and payable on site (coin-operated meter in place).

Guests with tents will have access to toilet facilities from 7am until 11.30pm. Guests with touring vehicles will be asked to use their own toilet and shower facilities.

Please bring your own toilet roll with you as this will not be supplied.

You must use hand sanitisers when entering and exiting the toilets and bring an anti bacteria spray or the nearest equivalent to clean before and after use of the toilets.

The site is situated alongside a canal that leads you directly to the coast in a short 15/20 min walk. You can then walk along the coast to shops and pubs.

    Disliked:

There was no-one on site to book in with. No reception. I called a phone number off the noticeboard and a gentleman did come to me approx 15 mins later which was fine, but then claimed that Pitchup had not sent my booking through to them even though it was confirmed to me 8 hours earlier. I couldn't find anywhere to get any local information from. This was provided by some kindly neighbours. The hardstanding pitch is a long way from the toilet block. At night there are lights around the hardstanding pitches but they stop shortly after. The walk to the toilet block is then unlit (apart from some other campers who thankfully had fairly lights). There are no lights on at the approach to the toilet block, nor were any of the ones on the building actually lit. It made for a very scary night-time walk. Once you get into the toilets there was a switch inside to light the building. The showers were 50p, which I was informed of, but there is nowhere locally to get any change, no shop nearby, no reception etc. It definitely felt that the use of the facilities was discouraged. There was a bottle of hand santiser on the wall outside both ladies and gents but they were dirty and not cleaned in the duration of my visit. No litter or dog waste bins on the site apart from the skip in the main waste collection point. Very basic factilites. No wifi.

Local attractions

This is a smashing spot for family and beach hols, with both Sutton on Sea and Huttoft beaches close by for colourful beach huts at the first and a peaceful relaxing vibe at the second. Skegness is an easy drive along the coast, and Mablethorpe and Ingoldmells are also easily accessible to the north and south.

Among the many other activities near the farm are the ambles and pedals of the Lincolnshire Wolds; sea and coarse fishing for slippery specimens like bass and mackerel, or day trips to Lincolnshire's small market towns like Alford, where there's also a war museum and a theatre.

Bargain hunters should also get along to one of Lincolnshire's many car boot sales, at Ingoldmells, Skegness and Mablethorpe on the coast and inland at Louth, Horncastle, Gainsborough and Hornbeach.
