General

  • Large peaceful parkland 12 miles from central London
  • Café, farm shop, barbecue rental and free wifi
  • Lots of activities for kids including pony rides and animal feeding

City slickers! If you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, you'll find the setting of Elmstree's Aldenham Country Park magic.

This wild camping and peaceful park is less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another topping aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a tiptop option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.)

Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks, pony rides, egg collecting and animal feeding among the activities for guests.

Kids can join an expert-led survival workshop, learn about life on the farm or search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include fishing and cycle rides on woodland trails.

The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, free wifi, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

Great site, basic facilities, Fantastic experience! 13/09/2018

I pitched in 'the avenues', the field with lots of trees which had a superb atmosphere & felt like proper wild camping.

I loved having a small open fire as it's extremely hard to find a campsite that will allow this!

The location of the site was great and was easy to find.

    Disliked:

Facilities are basic, but if you want a wild camping experience as they advertise they are more than adequate and were fine for the one night stay I had!

Compost toilets are a must try, even if it is only one time.

Fun site for a short stop over, with a parkrun and nice short walks 01/09/2018

Location, facilities - cafe for top up breakfast, and late lunch, plenty of toilets, both compost and porta loos plus the main carpark had 'proper toilets' , shower facilities, washing up areas. A parkrun on site,100 acre wood walk, walk round the reservoir stopping off for a pint at The Fishery half way round. Campfires allowed, able to buy wood onsite. Farm shop (though we didn't use) looked lovely, free park for children as well as a fantastic looking SEN park that you could pay extra for, same as the petting farm. We didn't use them but great if you had younger children.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately the downside of 'wild camping' is that people can pitch up where ever they want and can be particularly noisy. Our first night was fine, but the 2nd night a group came and camped really close to us when there was lots of other room and sat up talking until gone 3am. They sang a rousing chorus of happy birthday at 12.01am and woke me up. There was also a large group gathering in the other camping field when we came back through late afternoon, and people also came into the field to use it for late night bbq/picnics/drinking but not actually staying. No one seemed to really be monitoring the fields, 1 person did come round occasionally but looked to be more delivering hay bales/collecting up picnic benches etc and I don't think he'd have a clue who paid, who hadn't, who had a camp fire permit, who hadn't etc. That said, I would take my chances to come again, but try to tuck myself away from noisy neighbours!

Large Fields to camp on and not too far out of London, spacious and scenic.

    Disliked:

Only 1 shower for everyone to use and the shower was way too hot.
    Shower holder broken

From the manager...

Dear Camper

Thank you for your review. We have 4 showers on site and you only need to increase the cold water to to adjust what temperature you like.

Glad you enjoyed your stay.

Fantastic layout with trees, fields, open, closed areas etc.
Other campers were respectful of after hours noise limits and the amenities were plentiful.
Vans drove around collecting camp rubbish multiple times a day and the campsite overall was very clean.
Proximity to entertainment for kids was great - playgrounds, animals, walks etc.
