General

  • Large peaceful parkland 12 miles from central London
  • Café, farm shop, barbecue rental and free wifi
  • Lots of activities for kids including pony rides and animal feeding

City slickers! If you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, you'll find the setting of Elmstree's Aldenham Country Park magic.

This wild camping and peaceful park is less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another topping aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a tiptop option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.)

Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks, pony rides, egg collecting and animal feeding among the activities for guests.

Kids can join an expert-led survival workshop, learn about life on the farm or search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include fishing and cycle rides on woodland trails.

The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, free wifi, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

Lovely site with plenty for the kids to do. Highly recommend the farm tour. Site was kept well and maintained. Showers were warm. Staff were really friendly. We stayed an extra night because we enjoyed it so much.

    Disliked:

Few issues with entry/exit gate. Code change without being informed and entrance gate padlocked when we came home one evening.

We really enjoyed our stay here and we are planning our next trip already for a longer period. There is so much to do for the children, they were kept occupied continuously and they especially enjoyed the educational playground;even though the weather wasn't great we still got stuck in;they would of stayed in there all day if they could.

We loved the freedom of our stay, nothing beats the family sitting around a campfire :) I had seen previous comments before we came here complaining about the noise of the traffic and the toilet facilities; we heard more the noise of the animals than any traffic and even if we had,I can honestly say it wouldn't of bothered us;the setting was perfect. We love feeling at one with nature,so to have the animals just opposite where you pitch up tent is just lovely. And when your wild camping it is what it is. We had no reason for complaint.

Although there are seperate activities you can pay for,I had and will have no quarms or complaints about paying these prices,as you can see how well kept this farm is and how well and cared for the animals are.

The staff were equally lovely and welcoming. We would like to especially thank Precious and the young man on reception. I work in customer service myself and it was so refreshing to be welcomed with smiles and friendliness;very helpful and professional.
The workers around the farm were also lovely, taking the time to stop and chat, explaining about the animals etc.

The bouncy castle/snug room is a brilliant idea ,especially with bad weather and it again kept the kids occupied while the adults could sit down.

Thanks again and see you again soon.

    Disliked:

The only thing I would comment on is the Craft's Room as it is a brilliant idea, although it could of done with being more stocked. We did leave our names on the chalkboard which the children loved :)

Stopped here for two weeks whilst working in London and genuinely couldn't fault it. Loved how it was nice and quiet and there were trees and animals but within five minutes I was back in the hussle and bussle of London. The facilities were exactly what they said and if you wanted to experience wild camping you couldn't get better for the price.

A very overpriced field 10/08/2017

Location - it was 30 minutes from our house

    Disliked:

A very overpriced field. The toilets were very smelly and hadn't been emptied for a few days, the bin near the washing up area was overflowing with a half torn bag lying next to it. The grass was very long and wet and this combined with the toilets and the bin showed that very little care and attention is paid to the site and made me question why they are charging £42 per night for a pitch. The price also does not include any of the facilities at the park so we had to pay extra for the farm and the (small) educational playground.

Would advise anyone not to go

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, we understand Wild camping is not for everybody.

The compos toilets are cleaned every few hours and moved every couple of days. however we also have a very modern , very large toilet block near the car parking area , our apology if you were not aware of this facility.

We have 175 acre of things to do which is included in the camping fee, camping is only £12.50 per night which includes large site/parking and access to the entire park.

There are a few attractions that cost extra due to having staff supervise these attractions. :

wild camping with muddy facilities in the neighbourhood of London 02/08/2017

The silence and reclusiveness: You have to drive through a grazing land nearly about 800 metres. Then you're arriving at two great areals, a great meadow (ca. 300 m x 300 m) and an areal with old oaks.
We had only 3 other neighbour tents, nothing else!

    Why?

    Disliked:

On the edge of the meadow there were some compost toilets and one shower-cabin.
It was muddy and not very clean.
The plate wash was muddy too.

The camping site seems to be only a side-product of the Country Park. Mainly they have a country playground for young children from London to make experiences with nature.

If they would build a proper wooden house with some toilets, showers and and a proper plate wash (maybe environmentally sustainable), it would be a real great camping site in the neighbourhood of London.

From the manager...

Hi There

Thank you for your review, we do have a full modern toilet facility building just near the camping ground. Comes with:

- Male section with 4 cubicles, hot/cold water, mirrors and dryers
- Female Section as above
- Handicapped facilities and baby changing rooms
- 2 large hot showers with changing rooms

Location is just off the car park near the woodlands, only 30 second walk from where you were camping.

Location (visited the Game Fair at Hatfield House). We chose this site as we only required somewhere to sleep & hence did not use any facility other than the compost loo. Liked the fact we were not given long lists of rules or met with many notices on do's & don't's it was obviously expected that guests knew how to behave. I.e. No rubbish bins meant everyone took their own rubbish home. Field was clean & tidy & staff very friendly & helpful.

    Disliked:

A little worried about the fire bags sold by the park as it meant people lit these very close to their tents & it was quite a windy couple of days. Also people letting their children run riot screaming around the field up to midnight. Neither of these are the responsibility or fault of the park but did affect our stay.
