General

  • Large peaceful parkland 12 miles from central London
  • Café, farm shop, barbecue rental and free wifi
  • Lots of activities for kids including pony rides and animal feeding

City slickers! If you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, you'll find the setting of Elmstree's Aldenham Country Park magic.

This wild camping and peaceful park is less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another topping aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a tiptop option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.)

Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks, pony rides, egg collecting and animal feeding among the activities for guests.

Kids can join an expert-led survival workshop, learn about life on the farm or search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include fishing and cycle rides on woodland trails.

The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, free wifi, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

    Pretty much everything.
Farm was great for my 2 year old.
Camping was great, nice wooded field with plenty of options, not too formal and plenty of space between pitches.
Option of a fire which is rare and in my view an essential part of camping.
    Staff were friendly and helpful.
Lots of walks, barely started so plenty to come back for.

    Disliked:

Could hear a fair amount of traffic on a nearby road.

    A lot of space.

    Quiet.

Options to use facilities of Aldenham park.

    Disliked:

Described as wild camping means this is a minimal facilities campsite. The grass is 12 inches or taller in most parts of the main field and the access road track tests the average car suspension.

Compost toilets were ok but very basic as you might expect.
Single washing up sink was found which was for all requirements (cultery, brushing teeth etc). Could have done with small multi sink wooden block / shed.

Shower very basic. I wouldn't want to rely on it for more than a quick hose down.

All of this would be fine but for £32 for one night (1 adult and 2 young kids) I felt this was poor value for money. £10 to £15 would have been fine.

From the manager...

Dear Camper

Thank you for you review.

Wild camping means
- Lovely open fields
- Environmentally friendly
- Open fires
- Peaceful camping

I fully understand this may not be for everyone, however we do need to correct a few points;

- We have a very large block of facilities on the park which have showers/toilets/changing rooms/disabled changing rooms and baby changing rooms. And of course we have toilets/showers and washing up facilities in the camping areas. All are very reliable and clean.

I note your concern regarding the price, I think in comparison to other sites we are fairly competitive.

Included in the price is:

- 100 Acre wood
- Winnie pooh home with friends
- Several nature trail walks
- Park run group
- Woodlands
- Play ground
- Park right new to your tent
- Early check in
- Late check out ( which gives you 2 full days )

We offer so much more than most and the price is fantastic value.

Happy camping!

loved the nature. It is great to be able to spend the night outdoor few min from my house. You have to be prepared to use smelly toilets, but hey- you want to be close to nature and that is part of that as well.
My son had amazing time running around, doing camp fire, sleeping in tent...
    Definitely coming back soon.

    Disliked:

The only dislike was people ignoring rules about loud music. But luckily some guys were brave enough to stop them.

Would perhaps try the camp site rather than wild camping. 03/06/2018

Lots of space and variety of pitch locations.
    Close to central London
Good communication with site all the way through.
There is enough on site to keep kids busy for a day.
    Open fires allowed.
    nearby stores for supplies.

    Disliked:

I could have made this our regular quick getaway site but low noise from surrounding roads and aerodrome next door doesn't suite me. Others may not be bothered by it. Perhaps the camp site is quieter?
Muddy entrance to field and deep wheel tracks makes the access hard, the entrance was made usable after a vehicle got stuck though.
Used fire areas on the ground not cleared away, some litter on the ground makes the area look neglected compared to the rest of the well maintained site.

From the manager...

Hi

Thank you for your review. We have several camping and glamping fields, the field you selected is closer to the road but its a very quiet road with little use.

We do apologize about the weather, the rain was unexpected and of course in any grass camping grounds the field will be difficult.

The used fire areas are cleared every 2 weeks, generally after the campers have left. We will remove the soil, replace and then re-sow. If we are busy it would be silly to remove all fire pit areas when others could use the same spot. This saves doing any further damage to the grass areas.

The fields are very beautiful and cleaned of litter every few hours. However some people do allow their litter to fly around before we arrive to collect. i will share your feedback with the camping team.

Best of luck

Regards
ACP

I might need to qualify my daughter's quote above by the fact that most half-terms I work and we don't always have time together but we both truly had a fabulous time at Aldenham. We wanted to stay close to home to test drive a new tent but honestly I couldn't believe how comparatively close to central London we were yet there was beautiful scenery and we felt quite at one with the countryside!
On to the really good bits though there are so many things to do with the farm, adventure playgrounds, 100 acre wood, hire bikes, pony rides etc. If we had stayed longer I'm sure we would have ventured further afield too. Additionally the staff were genuinely helpful, friendly and approachable.

Oh and my daughter wants me to mention Rollo the rabbit...well he was pretty damn cute!

    Disliked:

Looking at other reviews it looks like some campers were not aware before they booked that toilets are composting toilets and showers heated from a gas cylinder rather than a spa like toilet and shower block! I guess it depends which site you booked from and what you were expecting. Personally I have camped at many sites with similar facilities and had no problem. There did seem to be relatively few drinking water taps but again, a bit of a walk is no problem. there are several camping fields and it might be worth thinking carefully about where to pitch in relation to the road, water taps toilets etc.
