Aldenham Country Park: Quiet rural camping just 12 miles from central London

General

  • Large peaceful parkland 12 miles from central London
  • Café, farm shop and barbecue rental
  • Activities on site including nature walks, animal feeding and fishing

City slickers! If you yearn for the bright lights of the UK capital but feel slightly faint at London hotel prices, you'll find the setting of Elstree's Aldenham Country Park magic.

This wild camping and peaceful park is less than a mile from the M1 motorway and 12 miles from central London – and three from Muggle-based antics at The Making of Harry Potter as well as seven from Wembley Stadium. (And another topping aspect of Aldenham's location? It's a tiptop option for Londoners seeking a nearby bolthole too.)

Although it's so close to the city, Aldenham is spellbindingly rural, set on a 175-acre parkland site next to a large lake and maintaining a quiet countryside atmosphere with nature walks and animal feeding among the activities for guests. Kids can also search for Winnie in the Pooh in the park's 100 Aker Wood area. Other activities include fishing and cycle rides on woodland trails.

The site's facilities include a café, playgrounds, barbecue rental and a shop selling farm produce. The amenities block has toilets, showers and disabled access.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Facilities/activities including the adventure playground and the farm are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 7 or more people are not permitted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

There is recycling contribution fee of £2.50 per 5 guests per stay, which is payable onsite.

The area was lovely, not too far Away from everything but still felt I was in the countryside.
The staff were very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Loved that they were happy to answer my questions

    Disliked:

The toilets were not very well maintained and the area around the sink could do with some boards or something down so it’s not slippy

Stayed in the 'School' field which is a good camping field with adequate basic facilities. As it was a busy weekend the music off at 10pm was a blessing and everyone seemed to respect the quieter later evening time.

    Staff very nice and accomodating.

Good choice for young families because of the nearby Farm, and park facilites.

    Disliked:

Would have preferd to stay in the 'Avenue' field which was closed for some reason. This is the one they show on Pitch-up with lots of trees/rope swings etc.

Recycling was non existent which is a shame in this day and age.

Toilets are chemical portaloos which are never a nice experience. Only basic 2 showers available for the School Field.

There was plenty of spaces between the pitches and the they were fairly flat and level.

The staff seemed nice and were friendly.

Lovely walk in the 100 Aker Wood (great for kids) and nice walk round the reservoir.

    Disliked:

The toilets seemed to flush with the contents of the tanks below and I don’t think had been changed for a while (smelled really bad!)

Fires should only be made using the wood bought there - we spent £64 of wood for the two nights fires.

Almost everything (including the play park) had extra costs attached.

Large open space in two fields. Plenty of toilets. Friendly staff. Price for solo travellers. Lovely setting with plenty to do in surrounding area.

    Disliked:

Directions (easy to miss entrance). Limited washing/washing up facilities compared to size of rest of park. Price to multiple people.

However there is a big issue when it has rained. The gates to both fields are not properly maintained. Absolute mudbath with cars getting stuck, made entrance to second field impossible.

The second big issue was the roping off of reserved areas. This was the entire outside of the field. It forced everone else into the muddy inner field. To make matters worse all but 2 of these areas were unused while I was there. When a large party then camped right next to me and played music until 3am it was all too close to comfort. Completely needless issue that could be avoided with better management of this site.

Spacious pitch areas, open fires which smelled amazing. loved the pick up coming round to check if additional firewood was needed and an icecream van in the evening.
For a cheap pitch near London it was okay.

    Disliked:

A bit close to a main road and an air field.
Toilet facilities are porta-loos and not much cleaner than festival toilets, showers are rudimentary shacks but functional and the water was hot.
