Burhope Farm Campsite: Jetty for launching kayaks

General

  • Quiet camping in the Wye Valley three miles from the Welsh border
  • Lake on site for fishing
  • Fire bowls and fuel for hire/sale

Blessed peace and biting fish… serenity seekers and amateur anglers alike can hope for a restfully quiet time at Burhope Farm Campsite near Orcop in Herefordshire, where the scenery is stupendous and the by-night stargazing stellar.

Even the uninitiated should get a nibble at the carp-crammed fishing lake here – but if fishing's not your thing, you can simply lie beside the lake or on one of the rustic benches with a book or your own thoughts…

When venturing off site, the farm is close enough to Herefordshire's and Shropshire's old market towns and active outdoor options for day trips, but peaceful enough for countryside unwinding and rural strolls in every direction: the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons National Park are both within easy reach.

Pitches are in a wide open field with wide open countryside views and access to a drinking water tap every two pitches, plus chemical disposal nearby and grey water disposal.

If you're the sort that hopes for first-class amenities on a site too, you're sorted: the centrally heated loo and shower block, disabled facilities and recycling facilities on site are all immaculately maintained.

Burhope Farm welcomes well-behaved dogs.

Please note

Bookings must not consist of more than 2 different households.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 5 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Our hard-standing pitch was level; water, electricity at our pitch. We seemed to be protected from the wind. The showers and washing up water was hot, and the site was clean, tidy and well presented.

    Disliked:

The distance to the shower/toilet block was a long walk! We have been in showers with larger cubicles and better facilities, eg in cubicle seat, more than one hook and shelf/basket for shower gel/ shampoo. My husband had no privacy for drying and dressing.
It was not clear on booking that the awning had to fit on the hard-standing as well as our camper van. No awnings allowed on the grass area between pitches. Pitch was 4.9m wide and our van + awning 5m wide!
On pitch grey water drain only suitable to use with a hose, so no use for our camper van. No drive on grey water drainage facility at the whole site.
The generator at the farm was noisy at night.

A nice open aspect with countryside views. Quiet location. Very friendly and helpful welcome. Secure site. Well kept clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

Sloping hardstanding making it difficult for levelling. Too far for from pitch to toilets, showers, washing up and waste disposal facilities.

The facilities were modern and spotlessly cleaned. The welcome was so warm and the owner, Pip, was always there to help if needed. The site is stunning with beautiful views and so, so peaceful. Gated entrance makes you feel so secure. Wouldn’t hesitate to return. One of the best we have stayed in.

Glorious spot, beautiful surroundings, ZERO PHONE SERVICE (not a bad thing), very clean toilets, although quite a walk to the loo, certainly for tents, but not a problem for vans.
Large plots, lots of open space, some very new plots with more being created.

    Disliked:

Tricky route for a large twin axle, certainly for a novice, ours is 7.9m so the last part of the drive was a little nervy, with narrow single track lanes.......but not impossible with care and attention of course

Well kept and peaceful site, the lady running the site makes sure everyone has a good stay. The fishing lake is fascinating, with fish swimming up to wherever you are. The toilets and showers were kept spotless.
In the middle of nowhere but with towns like Hereford only about 10 miles away.
Mobile signal was sketchy but this can be a good thing. There is chargeable WiFi but we didn't use this. We hired a fire pit, and it seemed a popular option.
We went as a family of 4 and our kids loved the site. We all did.

**Very** clean, **heated** toilet blocks. Soft water. Nice scenery, including horses in adjacent field. Friendly owner. Very little phone signal - the kids had to *play* actual outdoor games, not stare at their screens and no-one played music off their horrendous spotify playlists kut of their terrible phone speakers cos they couldn't get the signal. Great price considering the proximity to local destinations.

    Disliked:

Tent pitches are quite far from the toilet block. A noisy generator runs dawn til dusk, but you know, working farm in the middle of nowhere... the whole site is on a slight hill, but again, it's camping not glamping. No accessible shower, just the toilet. Only one washing up sink, maybe that was a COVID measure, but queueing for washing is even less fun than the washing up itself. No shop for miles, no café. Realistically this is all just nit picking, its a nice place.

Situation is in lovely countryside and peaceful. Despite being in late August it was not at all crowded and there was very little noise. The toilets and showers were very good and obviously regularly cleaned and disinfected. The small lake is a nice diversion if you want to catch a few carp - they almost throw themselves at you.

Local attractions

History and fishing, canoeing and cycling, pottering around market towns and clambering over old old castles are all handy in Herefordshire, Shropshire and over the border in Powys and east Wales.

The fishing in this area is a pull for anglers who come to try their luck at salmon, trout and coarse fishing on the River Wye. Pike of up to 30lb are landed from the Wye each year and it's said by those in the know to be one of the best rivers in Britain for bagging barbel.

If you don't fancy fishing, paddle a canoe or kayak along the river on a self-guided or guided trip available from one of the many watersports operators in the area. More canoeing and fishing day trips – and mountain biking, hiking and horse riding – are at the nearby Forest of Dean.

Both sides of the England/Wales border have more than their fair share of ancient castles to see – possibly because of all the ancient fighting between the two lands – and really it'd be wrong to come to these here parts without seeing at least one of them.

On the English side, thirteenth-century Goodrich Castle, eleventh-century Wigmore Castle and fifteenth-century Hampton Court Castle and Garden (no, not the Henry VIII one) are the ones to view; on the Welsh, go south to super Chepstow Castle or west into the Brecon Beacons for castle ruins at Hay and Carreg Cennen.
