  • Quiet camping in the Wye Valley three miles from the Welsh border
  • On a working farm 15 minutes' drive from the Wye Valley
  • Fire bowls and fuel for hire/sale; lake for fishing and wild swimming
Go on and treat yourself to a quiet time at Burhope Farm Campsite, a working farm site near Orcop in Herefordshire, where the scenery is stupendous and the by-night stargazing stellar. The highlight here is the on-site lake, for wild swims and fishing days (even beginners should get a nibble from the carp here) – but if neither activity takes your fancy, you can simply lie beside the lake or on one of the rustic benches with a book or your own thoughts. (Please note there's a per-rod fishing charge, and it's arranged around the wild swimming.) When venturing off site, the farm is close enough to Herefordshire's and Shropshire's old market towns and active outdoor options for day trips, but peaceful enough for countryside unwinding and rural strolls in every direction: the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons National Park are both within driving distance and the Wye Valley National Landscape is just a 15-minute drive away. Pitches are in a wide open field with wide open countryside views and access to a drinking water tap every two pitches, plus chemical disposal nearby and grey water disposal. If you're the sort that hopes for first-class amenities on a site too, you're sorted: the centrally heated loo and shower block, disabled facilities and recycling facilities on site are all immaculately maintained. Burhope Farm Campsite welcomes well-behaved dogs.

What customers say

This adults-only spot offers peace amidst lovely country views and a calm fishing lake. Pitches are spacious, facilities clean. Host Pip gets rave reviews for friendliness. A car is handy for local spots; occasional farm sounds are part of its rural charm. It boasts a secure dog field too.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location.
Toilet and shower block lovely and clean.
Lovely views.
Phone signal is terrible…I see this as a plus as I like to get away from technology when I’m camping.

Disliked Would not recommend for grass tent pitches. The areas for tents are sloping. Much better suited to caravans/motorhomes.

Liked Lovely place to stay and quiet, apart from the sheep!

Good shower, plenty of hot water

Good locations

Great farmers' family.

Disliked Confusing office opening times. There was a notice on the door that the office is open but closed in the afternoon so that we couldn't get milk or ice cream because of the heat wave.

The information given was confusing.

The website said we could have a BBQ in a pan, not disposable, so we brought ours in, and they refused to let us have a BBQ! So we ended up using a stove with a grill to make a makeshift BBQ, as we bought BBQ meats, and we were very disappointed.

The field was sloped, so we couldn't keep our table flat to play games.

The supermarket is 10/12miles so it's best to call in before arriving!!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review our site. We would just like to address a couple of your comments.

Regarding the office opening times, we do not state on the door any times nor that the office is open or closed in the afternoon, the only notice on the door is a contact number to call if there is no one in the office (at no point did you make any attempt to contact us with the phone number provided, had you done so, you would have been able to purchase anything you needed).

On arrival you were provided with a handout with all of the campsite information including places to shop and eat - we are not sure how this could be interpreted as confusing.

We would particularly like to address your comments on the bbqs, we do state on our website that during particularly hot and dry periods that bbqs and fire pits may not be allowed (I’m sure you would agree that this summer would fit those conditions) - for the safety of everyone staying on site and surrounding countryside we currently have a blanket ban on all fires and bbqs, may we also point out that Government guidance has also stated (there was an alert the weekend you stayed) that fires and bbqs should not be permitted during these extremely dry conditions.

Your final point regarding the supermarkets is actually incorrect, the nearest large supermarket is 9 miles away (Tesco Superstore) and there are a number of smaller local convenience stores less than 5 miles from the site (as mentioned on the information that you were provided with on arrival).

We are glad you enjoyed your stay.

Liked Location and peaceful placed to stay!!

Disliked The weather is not their fault!

Wish they would produce a proper map and instructions instead of typing up paper to make it more professional!

Lack of open office hours to get ice cream or wine if needed; visited 3 times, and the office was closed!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review our site.

We are slightly confused as this is the same booking as the above review but your comments don’t seem to match. As we stated above, there is a notice on the door with a contact phone number if nobody is in the office, at no point did you make any attempt to contact us (your review above stated that the opening times were confusing yet this one states there are no open office hours).

Regarding the ‘paper’ this is not a case of trying to be professional, the purpose is to provide campsite information to guests (facilities, locations, WiFi information, wild swimming etc and places to eat, drink and shop - most guests find this helpful) on a handout that is readily available throughout their stay.

Thank you again for this review; however we note that you have also reviewed us twice, not sure whether you have confused with another campsite.

Thank you.

We will definitely come back here

Very peaceful adults only place.
On saturday we fancied a swim in the lake and Pip the owner booked for me which allowed us to dive straight in (in our shorts and t shirts lol)
The facilities were very clean toilets showers smelt very fresh.
The huts look stunning with hot tubs and would def book in the future.
Pip informed us a sauna was being built in the near future. Essentials like icecream and toothpaste are available in the reception area.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Everything !!! beautiful scenery quiet and peaceful
Loved the adult only site you could hear all the lovely wildlife and farm noises.
Pip the owner very welcoming
Will then showed us the site and was lovely to chat to.
Wild water swimming a real must in this hot weather
Facilities spotless and clean
Would definitely go back
Pip very accommodating and easily sorted an extra night...we didn't want to leave!
JUST tips:
Phone coverage not great but the WiFi available was great ... nominal fee we paid £5 per device for 72 hrs. Well worth it as I'm with Vodafone and got no coverage at all
£5 for hr wild water swimming in the lake so remember your bathers ! Lovely experience if you are not afraid to swim with the carp
Little bit of a walk to the toilets from electric tent pitch so we had portable toilet ..definitely worth taking if you don't want the long nightly walk
Electric hook ups are a little way from your site pitches so make sure you have a long lead 25 metre or so

Disliked No dislikes...Loved it

Liked Lovey campsite, quiet, and in beautiful countryside. The toilet and shower block were kept very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Although this was adjacent to a working farm we weren't disturbed by too much noise and in fact what little farm noise we heard enhanced our stay in the countryside.

Local attractions

History and fishing, canoeing and cycling, pottering around market towns and clambering over old old castles are all handy in Herefordshire, Shropshire and over the border in Powys and east Wales. The fishing in this area is a pull for anglers who come to try their luck at salmon, trout and coarse fishing on the River Wye. Pike of up to 30lb are landed from the Wye each year and it's said by those in the know to be one of the best rivers in Britain for bagging barbel. If you don't fancy fishing, paddle a canoe or kayak along the river on a self-guided or guided trip available from one of the many watersports operators in the area. More canoeing and fishing day trips – and mountain biking, hiking and horse riding – are at the nearby Forest of Dean. Both sides of the England/Wales border have more than their fair share of ancient castles to see – possibly because of all the ancient fighting between the two lands – and really it'd be wrong to come to these here parts without seeing at least one of them. On the English side, thirteenth-century Goodrich Castle, eleventh-century Wigmore Castle and fifteenth-century Hampton Court Castle and Garden (no, not the Henry VIII one) are the ones to view; on the Welsh, go south to super Chepstow Castle or west into the Brecon Beacons for castle ruins at Hay and Carreg Cennen.
