  • Family-owned farm site in open countryside with Forest of Dean views
  • Under 10 minutes’ drive from Newnham-on-Severn and 25 to Wye Valley
  • Half a mile from the River Severn and the Severn Way
Big skies, green Gloucestershire countryside and artisan booze: what more could one want on a hol than this trip-boosting trio? If this sounds like just the holiday ticket, seek out Severn Valley Touring Caravan and Camping Site in the village of Awre, less than a five-minute walk from a traditional cider producer and a 10-minute drive to lovely Newnham-on-Severn. The park's also in an easy position to get to, as it's a mile and a half from the A48 Gloucester to Chepstow road and 25 minutes by car from the Wye Valley. Park up, pitch up then sit – cider in hand – to take in the gorgeous views from here (the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills are visible on clear days) and watch birds soar through the skies: the site's surrounds are home to creatures like kestrels, buzzards and red kites. Early risers might get a sneak peek of hares around the grounds at dawn too, and barn owls have been spotted in neighbouring fields during dusk in this ancient area once listed in the Domesday book as a royal hunting ground… Whatever the time of day or night, visitors have access to well-designed amenities like a purpose-built toilet and shower block, as well as covered washing-up facilities and a shower room that’s accessible to people with disabilities. Off site, the Severn Way is about half a mile away for roams beside the river. Time your visit right (check timetables online) to get a glimpse of the Severn Bore phenomenon, the surfable waves that roll right through the water at certain times of the year…

What customers say

This is a highly recommended, peaceful campsite with immaculate facilities. Visitors praise the spacious, level pitches, many with privacy hedges, and the spotlessly clean shower and toilet blocks. The friendly and helpful owners are frequently mentioned, along with the beautiful, well-maintained grounds. The site is noted for its quiet atmosphere and scenic rural location, with some guests specifically appreciating the dog-free policy. The narrow access road is a minor point for some.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Peaceful, beautiful surroundings. Spotless toilet and shower facilities. Washing up sinks? grey water and chemical toilet disposal all spotlessly clean. It's very remote but some lovely walks and a lazy weekend was perfect.

Disliked Nothing.

The Dean Heritage Centre is 15 minutes away for planning wooded walks and more ambles can be had at the National Trust’s Westbury Court Garden in around 10. Other landscapes to lope around in the local area include Lydney Park, a 17th-century country estate with Roman ruins, within a 20-minute drive. If kids start to tire of staying on solid ground, they can take on an adventure course above the treetops at Go Ape (15 minutes' drive); other spots to suit small sorts include the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) and the Forest of Dean Adventure Park (30 minutes). Above-ground adventures complete, seek subterranean times at Clearwell Caves (25 minutes), then glide about at your own leisure in a canoe hired from Symonds Yat (35 minutes).
