If this sounds like just the holiday ticket, seek out Severn Valley Touring Caravan and Camping Site in the village of Awre, less than a five-minute walk from a traditional cider producer and a 10-minute drive to lovely Newnham-on-Severn. The park's also in an easy position to get to, as it's a mile and a half from the A48 Gloucester to Chepstow road and 25 minutes by car from the Wye Valley. Park up, pitch up then sit – cider in hand – to take in the gorgeous views from here (the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills are visible on clear days) and watch birds soar through the skies: the site's surrounds are home to creatures like kestrels, buzzards and red kites. Early risers might get a sneak peek of hares around the grounds at dawn too, and barn owls have been spotted in neighbouring fields during dusk in this ancient area once listed in the Domesday book as a royal hunting ground… Whatever the time of day or night, visitors have access to well-designed amenities like a purpose-built toilet and shower block, as well as covered washing-up facilities and a shower room that’s accessible to people with disabilities. Off site, the Severn Way is about half a mile away for roams beside the river. Liked Perfect place for our families first time camping. Clean and tidy pitches and the shower block/washing up facilities were fab. We will definitely be coming back. Host was friendly and welcoming. Animals around the camp which was a hit with the children.

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Although only stayed 1 night rather than 2 due to the storms and our children not being too happy about the thunder.

Liked Immaculate pitch and site. Toilets, showers, sinks were clean. Joanne texted on the day to let us know how to gain entry and our pitch number and she visited later in the day to make sure we were ok. Only a few minutes drive from the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to in Blakeney.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site

Liked We absolutely love this site! We have returned many times over the years and have also had the pleasure of staying in one of the shepherd huts. It is such a peaceful and relaxing place, with spacious pitches that offer plenty of privacy thanks to the hedges between each pitch. Each pitch also has its own water and electricity, which makes staying here really convenient.

Joanne is a fantastic host – friendly, welcoming and always approachable. The facilities are consistently clean and tidy, and the shower facilities are excellent, with a great shower area and attached changing space.

An added bonus for us is that the site is dog-free. My wife has a fear of dogs, so knowing that dogs aren't allowed means she can relax and enjoy the site without worrying about encountering them.

We always enjoy our stays here and look forward to returning again soon. Highly recommended!

Liked Amazing campsite with beautiful surroundings and a peaceful atmosphere. The facilities were clean and well maintained, and the host were very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing camping experience.

Merlin shepherd's hut (family)

Liked Fantastic stay in the Merlins Hut! The hut was equipped with everything you need. The shower and toilet block was exceptionally clean. The site is quiet and a great location for exploring the Forest of Dean.

Liked Absolutely lovely secluded spot, this site is well presented with lovely big pitches. although we didn’t meet the owner, we received help messages on arrival and very helpful when we needed some assistance. Lots of extra little touches, like fresh flowers daily in the washrooms, which were spotlessly clean and faultless, we would recommend for “a get away from it all stay”

Less than 20 minutes’ drive from the Forest of Dean, this is a solid base for ticking off tourist attractions, taking part in outdoorsy pursuits and shopping in market towns. The Dean Heritage Centre is 15 minutes away for planning wooded walks and more ambles can be had at the National Trust’s Westbury Court Garden in around 10. Other landscapes to lope around in the local area include Lydney Park, a 17th-century country estate with Roman ruins, within a 20-minute drive. If kids start to tire of staying on solid ground, they can take on an adventure course above the treetops at Go Ape (15 minutes' drive); other spots to suit small sorts include the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) and the Forest of Dean Adventure Park (30 minutes). Above-ground adventures complete, seek subterranean times at Clearwell Caves (25 minutes), then glide about at your own leisure in a canoe hired from Symonds Yat (35 minutes).
