  • Quiet and scenic site with direct access to Forest of Dean footpaths
  • Clearwell Caves 15 minutes’ drive; Tintern Abbey half an hour
  • Dog exercise field and modern bathrooms; pubs a mile away
Fancy the chance to go walking in the woods without having to drive there first? Deanwood Caravan and Camping has direct access to footpaths taking you into the Forest of Dean – so it really could hardly be easier to get out and explore this gorgeous Gloucestershire scenery. Getting out for a walk might take you along woodland trails in search of local birds and wild animals – or it might involve heading up to Yorkley village, a mile away, which has a dog-friendly pub as well as a well-stocked shop (a handy place to pick up picnic supplies or something to throw on your barbecue back at base). Dogs are very welcome at this peaceful site, and they will have access to their own exercise field where they can have a good run around off lead. Other facilities include washing-up areas and access to a fridge, freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer. Toilets and showers are housed in a modern heated block so there’s no need to worry about chilly toes… The Forest of Dean is a fairly compact area, so pretty much all of its attractions are within a 10/15-minute drive; there’s also more to see and do over in the nearby Wye Valley National Landscape, including canoeing or just admiring spectacular river views at Symonds Yat (half an hour’s drive). Three miles away, the town of Lydney has various leisure facilities including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and is a handy source of shops, supermarkets and restaurants.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful retreat with stunning Forest of Dean views and direct woodland access. Visitors praise the immaculate cleanliness of facilities, spacious pitches, and friendly, helpful staff. Free laundry facilities and on-site amenities like a pizza van are popular additions. While some find the hardstanding pitches a little clinical or mention the steep walk to local pubs, the overall experience is highly positive, with many planning return visits.

Beech Row electric grass touring pitch

Liked Quiet and gorgeous views. Very friendly staff.

Disliked The lower shower block, men’s toilet had no soap for the whole weekend, which means they weren’t checked from Friday evening to Sunday.

Beech Row electric grass touring pitch

Liked Wonderful view from Beech Row as no one on the pitch in front of me! Great clean facilities. Loved that you can walk straight into the forest. Rather pricey but you can get a 10% discount if you return for 2 nights in the future. Very friendly welcome by the lovely managers. Very peaceful - no road noise hooray!

Disliked Water everywhere was only warm and only 2 other pitches in use. I would not want to stay on the Motorhome gravel pitch with the view of a large building / basically a car park. The Hedgerow pitches views are of the Hedge or the building.

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch (premium)

Liked We really liked Deanwood.

The team were super friendly and helpful. The situation of the site is quiet with beautiful views right in the heart of the Forest of Dean. Our hard standing pitch was perfect, good size with some grass next to the gravel and nice and level with 16A hook up and water.

The shared facilities were absolutely spotless. There were also laundry facilities at no extra charge.

The site is in walking distance of a couple of pubs and only a couple of miles from Mallards Pike.

Disliked We are struggling to find any issues with our stay at Deanwood!

The only slight comment we have is the WiFi was a bit patchy with low data rates.

Hedgeside electric grass touring pitch (sloping)

Liked Quiet, tidy and well organised site with pitches to suit a wide variety of tastes. Friendly and helpful owners. Beautiful views of a lovely part of England. The location is perfect for exploring the Forest of Dean, Wye valley, Severn valley and Monmouthshire. An ideal placed :)

Disliked I didn't experience anything to dislike. The terms and Conditions can seem a little offputing though and are best read before booking...something I didn't do. That said compliance is straight forward.

Beech Row electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely big pitches, easy access to toilets and showers. Which were spotlessly clean. Owners very friendly and helpful. Great walks straight from the campsite. Enclosed dog field so our dog with questionable recall could have a run around. 100% be returning.

Local attractions

Sights in the Forest of Dean include Clearwell Caves (15 minutes’ drive), an underground system of nine natural caverns that were mined for iron ore from Roman times until well into the 19th century; and Puzzlewood (15 minutes), an area of ancient woodland laced with paths. Both sites have been used as settings for various episodes of ‘Doctor Who’. A former prison built in the 18th century, Littledean Jail (15 minutes) now houses an eclectic collection ranging from punk-rock memorabilia, to witchcraft-related artefacts. There are also location-appropriate displays such as village stocks, body cages and hangman’s nooses, plus personal items of notorious criminals like the Kray Twins. Tintern Abbey (half an hour), sitting in ruins on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, was founded in the 1100s and became a victim of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries policy just four centuries later. In addition to falconry displays, the site runs informative guided tours shedding light on the life of the monks.
