General

  • Peaceful site on the edge of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds
  • 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Cirencester and Tetbury
  • In the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant

Stunning landscapes, scenic market towns and the peace and quiet of the Cotswolds… How could you say no to that? At family-friendly site The Thames Head Inn, four miles from Cirencester market town in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, you definitely won't want the chance.

Thames Head is well-placed for exploring the spectacular Cotswolds on foot or by bike – the start of the Thames Path, which follows the world-famous river for 184 miles from source to sea, is half a mile from the site, and there are loads of cycles tours and walking routes starting in Cirencester and Tetbury, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

If that's not your scene, kick back on the dog-friendly site in the shade of the trees, soaking in the scenic and peaceful Cotswolds countryside, or take a relaxed stroll through the fields with Rex.

Worked up an appetite? The site is in the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant, where food is served well into the evening and the drinks keep flowing until closing… If you fancy fending for yourself, pick up supplies in Cirencester or Kemble – a 20-minute walk away – and fire up the barbecue. For a change of scenery – and menus – there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes of Thames Head.

Had a great overnight stay at the Thames Head Inn. Really friendly owner and staff gave us a warm welcome, and showed us everything straight away. Pitches all tidy and organised (and busy!) - road nearby but not too much disturbance. Very good and clean (and warm!) shower/toilet room available for campers 24/7, plus a lovely evening with excellent homemade food in the pub itself. Couldn't fault it.

This site has easy access off the main road [the A433 South West of Cirencester]. Turn in to the Car park of the Thames Head inn (on LHS going North)
The Thames Head is an excellent Dog Friendly Pub with good food, beers and wines.

The campsite behind the pub is well laid out with sheltered hard standing wide pitches and electric hook-up for Campervans and Caravans. There is an on-site water tap and waste water discharge facilities.
There is a clean warm shower room and toilet at the back of the pub open 24 hours for campers.

Whilst close to the Railway line, the noise is not intrusive since GWR introduced the new quieter diesel.

We stayed there in Mid-January for 3 nights and had a great stay.

[Note that the Postcode is North up the road beyond the pub ]

Best of all there is easy access to the source of the Thames and the footpaths to the canals (Thames and Severn) and South to Kemble town.

Try a good walk to the Tunnel Inn above the Sapperton Tunnel Southern Entrance

There are plenty of stately homes near The Thames Head Inn if you want to get a feel for the history of the area, with Newark Park, Sudeley Castle, Dyrham Park, Bowood House and Berkeley Castle all within 45 minutes’ drive of the site. TV addict? Visit Chavenage House, 15 minutes from Thames Head, which you may recognise as the Poldark family home of Trenwith from the eponymous BBC drama…

If you’re more at home in the outdoors, explore some of the many gardens within 20 minutes of the site, rub elbows with the royals on a trip to Highgrove Gardens at the private residence of Charles and Camilla or, on a grander scale, stroll around the national arboretum at Westonbirt.

Got kids trailing along? Get the best of both worlds at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden – meet the giraffes, lions and camels, then wander through the gardens at the Victorian manor house. If that’s not hitting the spot, take the kids to learn more about the Romans at Corinium Museum in Cirencester or give them Harry Potter vibes on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway.

If all of this sounds a little too sedate for you, never fear... Have a high-octane day at the Gloucestershire Rally School or test your mettle with a trip to Head for Heights – that adrenaline will be pumping in no time.
