There's plenty of greenery around the site

General

  • Peaceful site on the edge of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds
  • 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Cirencester and Tetbury
  • In the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant

Stunning landscapes, scenic market towns and the peace and quiet of the Cotswolds… How could you say no to that? At family-friendly site The Thames Head Inn, four miles from Cirencester market town in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, you definitely won't want the chance.

Thames Head is well-placed for exploring the spectacular Cotswolds on foot or by bike – the start of the Thames Path, which follows the world-famous river for 184 miles from source to sea, is half a mile from the site, and there are loads of cycles tours and walking routes starting in Cirencester and Tetbury, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

If that's not your scene, kick back on the dog-friendly site in the shade of the trees, soaking in the scenic and peaceful Cotswolds countryside, or take a relaxed stroll through the fields with Rex.

Worked up an appetite? The site is in the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant, where food is served well into the evening and the drinks keep flowing until closing… If you fancy fending for yourself, pick up supplies in Cirencester or Kemble – a 20-minute walk away – and fire up the barbecue. For a change of scenery – and menus – there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes of Thames Head.

We were made to feel very welcome upon arrival and throughout our stay. Bar and waiting staff were very attentive and had a wealth of knowledge about walks and things to do in the local area. Food in the pub was good quality and plentiful.

    Disliked:

Facilities were all clean however 1 shower and toilet to serve all on the campsite was barely adequate although this would not deter us from returning.
There was some road noise but after a couple of days we became oblivious to it.

Lovely quiet site, pitches are a great size and well thought out. We didn't eat in the pub as we'd bought too much food with us that needed eating, however, it looked lovely so we'll definitely be back!

The site was clean and quiet. Far enough away from the pub that no noise was heard at all.
Pleasant 1km walk across the fields to see the "Source of the River Thames" starting from the pub car park.
Very friendly greeting from young lady in the pub, who showed us to our flat, pleasant pitch, pointing out the various facilities.
Water, electricity and waste disposal were all readily to hand.
We had read about road noise, but we did not find this overly intrusive.
The aspect was open and green, with many trees around - lots of birdsong to greet us in the morning.

    Disliked:

Just one unisex shower and toilet for the site seems barely adequate, and it is a fair step in the middle of the night. I was glad it was not raining. It was however, very clean and hygienic.

Very nice touring site, had a meal in the pub which was lovely and all things done for covid protection

    Disliked:

Site became very crowded .also a train track at the back and a fast road at the side made it a bit noisy at times, but things calmed down each night.Could do with extra facilities.

Lovely pub and small pitch conveniently located. Toilet and shower block a short walk but no different from a larger site. Staff in pub were friendly and taking Covid security seriously. Pitches were level.

    Disliked:

I think a train line runs nearby which you can hear and the lighting for the pub sign quite bright (helpful to see by but you wouldn't want the pitch next to it)

Local attractions

There are plenty of stately homes near The Thames Head Inn if you want to get a feel for the history of the area, with Newark Park, Sudeley Castle, Dyrham Park, Bowood House and Berkeley Castle all within 45 minutes’ drive of the site. TV addict? Visit Chavenage House, 15 minutes from Thames Head, which you may recognise as the Poldark family home of Trenwith from the eponymous BBC drama…

If you’re more at home in the outdoors, explore some of the many gardens within 20 minutes of the site, rub elbows with the royals on a trip to Highgrove Gardens at the private residence of Charles and Camilla or, on a grander scale, stroll around the national arboretum at Westonbirt.

Got kids trailing along? Get the best of both worlds at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden – meet the giraffes, lions and camels, then wander through the gardens at the Victorian manor house. If that’s not hitting the spot, take the kids to learn more about the Romans at Corinium Museum in Cirencester or give them Harry Potter vibes on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway.

If all of this sounds a little too sedate for you, never fear... Have a high-octane day at the Gloucestershire Rally School or test your mettle with a trip to Head for Heights – that adrenaline will be pumping in no time.
