The Thames Head Inn: There's plenty of greenery around the site

General

  • Peaceful site on the edge of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds
  • 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Cirencester and Tetbury
  • In the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant

Stunning landscapes, scenic market towns and the peace and quiet of the Cotswolds… How could you say no to that? At family-friendly site The Thames Head Inn, four miles from Cirencester market town in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, you definitely won't want to miss the chance.

Thames Head is well-placed for exploring the spectacular Cotswolds on foot or by bike – the start of the Thames Path, which follows the world-famous river for 184 miles from source to sea, is half a mile from the site, and there are loads of cycles tours and walking routes starting in Cirencester and Tetbury, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

If that's not your scene, kick back on the dog-friendly site in the shade of the trees, soaking in the scenic and peaceful Cotswolds countryside, or take a relaxed stroll through the fields with Rex.

Worked up an appetite? The site is in the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant, where food is served well into the evening and the drinks keep flowing until closing (remember to book a table, as mealtimes can get very busy). If you fancy fending for yourself, pick up supplies in Cirencester or Kemble – a 20-minute walk away – and fire up the barbecue. For a change of scenery – and menus – there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes of Thames Head.

Perfect locations with great on site facilities and superb food. Not the first time we have stayed and everything was 1st class then as well. Fantastic hosts who have now offered us a full refund due to a power cut caused by the recent storm.

Very friendly people excellent pub with fantastic food. Pitches are good but would be difficult with an awning as the grass that you would pitch on is higher than the hardstanding or slopes upwards from the hardstanding. If you pitched on the hardstanding there would be nowhere for your car. Makes me think the site is more geared to campervans than caravans.Had a great few days there and will definitely return. This is a very good site and with a little thought could be a great site.

    Disliked:

Toilet situation. 1 toilet in the same room as the shower for 12 pitches. If someone is having a shower in the morning you may have to wait a while for the loo. It was also not flushing for 2 of the days we were there. Take a torch it is very dark at night as there are no lights on site.

Lovely area for country walks and visiting Cirencester. Good pub with a range of food from very good pub grub to a very nice specials board. Dog friendly pub and site for well behaved pets. Staff very friendly and helpful. We booked the slightly larger pitch which was perfect for us (Chausson 7m x 2.3m) Smaller pitches are good for T4 type campers. New, clean and tidy grey and black waste disposal compound. Water point needs a longish hose as at the back of one of the grass pitches ( a bit soggy just now) next to waste compound. Single toilet/shower room is available 24 x7, looked clean and tidy (we use our on board facilities) but a friend in a T5 used it ok. Interesting airfield/planes at Kemble a short walk away, including the U2 ( only ever heard them.before) doing a low pass.
Easy access to Thames/Severn Way The Wyisis Way and The Monarch Way.

    Disliked:

There is a little road and rail noise which didn't bother us, but I know some people wouldn't like it.

Very warm welcome from the friendly staff at the Thames Head Inn and a great base for exploring the Cotswolds and its stunning villages. Pub itself is cosy and popular with diners - serving good food, large portions and great value for money.
Price for stay very reasonable with electric hook up.
    Facilities were clean and tidy.
    Perfect for overnighters or weekends.

    Disliked:

Only small things, which we were aware of before our visit as previously mentioned by others, this site has no washing up area and the only toilet and shower are in the same room so maybe better suited to motorhomes than campervans. The road by the pub is busy and fast so be prepared for road noise especially if you are along the top fence.

Local attractions

There are plenty of stately homes near The Thames Head Inn if you want to get a feel for the history of the area, with Newark Park, Sudeley Castle, Dyrham Park, Bowood House and Berkeley Castle all within 45 minutes’ drive of the site. TV addict? Visit Chavenage House, 15 minutes from Thames Head, which you may recognise as the Poldark family home of Trenwith from the eponymous BBC drama…

If you’re more at home in the outdoors, explore some of the many gardens within 20 minutes of the site, rub elbows with the royals on a trip to Highgrove Gardens at the private residence of Charles and Camilla or, on a grander scale, stroll around the national arboretum at Westonbirt.

Got kids trailing along? Get the best of both worlds at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden – meet the giraffes, lions and camels, then wander through the gardens at the Victorian manor house. If that’s not hitting the spot, take the kids to learn more about the Romans at Corinium Museum in Cirencester or give them Harry Potter vibes on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway.

If all of this sounds a little too sedate for you, never fear... Have a high-octane day at the Gloucestershire Rally School or test your mettle with a trip to Head for Heights – that adrenaline will be pumping in no time.
