There's plenty of greenery around the site

General

  • Peaceful site on the edge of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds
  • 10 minutes’ drive from the towns of Cirencester and Tetbury
  • In the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant

Stunning landscapes, scenic market towns and the peace and quiet of the Cotswolds… How could you say no to that? At family-friendly site The Thames Head Inn, four miles from Cirencester market town in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, you definitely won't want the chance.

Thames Head is well-placed for exploring the spectacular Cotswolds on foot or by bike – the start of the Thames Path, which follows the world-famous river for 184 miles from source to sea, is half a mile from the site, and there are loads of cycles tours and walking routes starting in Cirencester and Tetbury, both within 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

If that's not your scene, kick back on the dog-friendly site in the shade of the trees, soaking in the scenic and peaceful Cotswolds countryside, or take a relaxed stroll through the fields with Rex.

Worked up an appetite? The site is in the grounds of the Thames Head Inn bar-restaurant, where food is served well into the evening and the drinks keep flowing until closing… If you fancy fending for yourself, pick up supplies in Cirencester or Kemble – a 20-minute walk away – and fire up the barbecue. For a change of scenery – and menus – there are plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes of Thames Head.

Lovely olde worlde pub with a big roaring fire. Good food & friendly staff, reasonable prices.
Plenty of room on the pitches for our 7.4 metre long motorhome. Great for touring if you have separate transport or for an overnight stop.

    Disliked:

Needs a little more work on the waste water side of things. Also only one toilet/shower so if someone was taking a shower you couldn’t use the toilet.

What great little site right behind the pub. Good location for walking and only 15 min walk to Kemble train station if you want to visit Cheltenham. Had dinner in the pub which was welcoming, good service and excellent food. Well worth a visit.

  • Electric grass tent pitch
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

Easy to find (The Thames Head is on the main A433 Tetbury to Cirencester road), decent facilities which were perfectly clean & functional, a sheltered place to pitch my tent, a suitable place to chain my bike up and (obviously, given that the campsite is in the grounds of a pub) somewhere on the doorstep to have a drink and-if you got there early enough-some seriously good food as well-judging by what was on the menu board in the pub. All the staff I spoke to were friendly, welcoming and informative so no complaints there at all. Several of the guests had Dogs with them so the place is obviously very Dog-friendly with an extra mention going to Ivy the Weimaraner who was lovely!

    Disliked:

As Campsites go, this one is rather pricey. Yes, all the things I listed above are correct, but given that the only camping facilities that are available to use are a shower, a toilet (only one of each on the entire site so you can imagine the queues in high season when it gets busy) and a drinking water tap, I regard twenty pounds a night to be somewhat expensive. I had similar facilities at a campsite in Bristol the previous night and was charged only £10 and again at a campsite I visited in the south of Aberdeenshire on October 26th where I was only charged £8. With the nearby Tunnel House Inn at Coates no longer offering camping, it would appear that The Thames Head have no local competition for business-and their pricing policy seems to make the camper only too aware of this fact..

Pleasant site with spacious pitches. We arrived after dark in pouring rain but received a warm and helpful welcome. Pub is cosy and dog friendly which we appreciated on such a damp evening.

    Disliked:

There is only one cubicle with loo and shower. It is warm and spacious with plenty of hot water. The site was quiet for our visit but when busy, there might be quite a queue!

If you sleep light, close to busy road and mainline train using horn due to open pedestrian crossing.
Only one shower / toilet unit. Good if you're the only one there, suspect a nightmare if busy.

Local attractions

There are plenty of stately homes near The Thames Head Inn if you want to get a feel for the history of the area, with Newark Park, Sudeley Castle, Dyrham Park, Bowood House and Berkeley Castle all within 45 minutes’ drive of the site. TV addict? Visit Chavenage House, 15 minutes from Thames Head, which you may recognise as the Poldark family home of Trenwith from the eponymous BBC drama…

If you’re more at home in the outdoors, explore some of the many gardens within 20 minutes of the site, rub elbows with the royals on a trip to Highgrove Gardens at the private residence of Charles and Camilla or, on a grander scale, stroll around the national arboretum at Westonbirt.

Got kids trailing along? Get the best of both worlds at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Garden – meet the giraffes, lions and camels, then wander through the gardens at the Victorian manor house. If that’s not hitting the spot, take the kids to learn more about the Romans at Corinium Museum in Cirencester or give them Harry Potter vibes on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway.

If all of this sounds a little too sedate for you, never fear... Have a high-octane day at the Gloucestershire Rally School or test your mettle with a trip to Head for Heights – that adrenaline will be pumping in no time.
