Stow-on-the-Wold Rugby Club: Grass pitch

General

  • Gloucestershire family campsite with Cotswold Hills views
  • A 15-minute drive to Cotswold Farm Park; 30 minutes to Blenheim Palace
  • Five minutes’ drive to Stow-on-the-Wold; bus service nearby

Along with a flat and spacious grass camping ground (as one might expect of sporting pitches), Stow-on-the-Wold Rugby Club has some seriously eye-catching views of the Cotswold Hills. This site is in a fab location just outside the historic village of Stow-on-the Wold in Gloucestershire, making it a smashing spot for family rambles, touring and gallivanting all over the Cotswolds.

From the hilltop pitches you can walk for miles on local footpaths without going near a road (thus making this a cracking base for cyclists too), and if you’re keen to get on the golf course, you can book a round at Naunton Downs Golf Club (10 minutes).

Eager to do some city sightseeing but prefer to leave the vehicle behind? No worries, a local bus service can whisk you off to theatreland in Stratford-upon-Avon (40 minutes) or the dreaming spires of Oxford (55 minutes).

Back on site, simple facilities include showers, toilets and a wifi connection (around the clubhouse) so you can keep in touch with the folk back home.

Stow (five minutes’ drive) is the nearest village, with cafés, bars and a couple of small and handy stores for basics. For more amenities, the best stop is Moreton-in-Marsh (15 minutes) for markets, pubs, supermarkets and indie shops. It’s also got a mainline rail station with services to London.

Please note

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

A cable measuring at least 25 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Quiet, nice location, free flow hot water, near a beautiful village, good price, toilets and showers were fine

    Disliked:

Pitch not level, no contact from site host so didn't know which pitch was ours - not that it mattered in the end, showers were a bit dirty (hairs on the walls, a big dead spider), no WiFi. Dog poo on the field (not ideal for an active toddler)

We really like the position of the site, close to Stow in the Wold and the lovely views.

    Disliked:

The shower and toliet cabins were in good condition and usable, the gents shower was filthy, obviously used by the rugby players as the ladies was not so bad.
The toilets and showers are not regularly cleaned, when we were there someone did have a quick flit round the toilets which was next to pointless.
There are two long stay units plus a static caravan, the area around the campervan and static caravan is very untidy at best.
Pitch sizes are very small, as they have a huge field to use.

Location is fantastic. Everywhere is either a short drive, or bike distance away. Beautiful views.

    Disliked:

Showers and toilet cubicles were not swept out and definitely not cleaned daily, empty shampoo bottles etc on the floor aswell as overflowing bins and dirty toilets ..we were not the only people to complain and got met with a shirty reply saying that her daughter cleaned them on Sunday ( it was wednesday!! ) and when she did clean it the floor wasn't swept anyway ...disgusting !!
Hardstands were very gritty and covered the floor of caravans. Electrics were confusing as to which stand was yours? Some strange caravan permanently parked at the beginning with a very large Alsatian which the guy joked to my friend was vicious and he let it roam across the site without picking up the mess.

    Nice setting

    Disliked:

The site roads and hard stand were a very sandy material which seemed to get everywhere inside our camper. We stayed here for 5 nights in that period the toilet blocks were not cleaned once. I asked the lady about this and she was very dismissive of my comments and told me they as cleaned everyday. When we arrived there was no electrical connection available to us when I asked I was told the guy that deals with the electric isn't in until tomorrow and suggest I unplug one to plug mine in.... Also the site was littered with dogs mess.

Great location a couple of minutes from stow on the wold. Perfect for visiting Morton in Marsh, Bouton on the Water, steam railway etc.
It is a rugby club, so camping is just a side line.
Friday night there was a large private party at the club which stopped at midnight. Sunday there was rugby being played on the adjacent pitch.
For those arriving for pitches with electric hookup there's a handy board with your placement.
Club has a very hands off approach. No check in. As I never entered the building I never found out whether there was any kind of reception. Possibly at the bar ?
A simple pdf map of the site and where you had to go would have been a benefit, but even if you don't make contact it's easy enough to work out. For those who like to be spoon fed it could be more of an issue.
The place had a good atmosphere and I would stay again based on proximity and cost.

    Disliked:

Reading recent reviews the toilets and showers could be clean or dirty. These are typical portacabin type brought on to site. New, well made fairly high spec and all fittings and fixtures as I would expect. 4 units, shower units had 3 nice showers. Units by their very nature are compact. Shows and toilets were reasonably tidy, but only by the grace of the users, not by regular inspection and cleaning. Hand towels and loo roll didn't run out. Urinal cakes and more regular cleaning would have been appreciated.
Overall they were better than I expected. It is a camp site after all.
Having emailed the club, I had to call them to see where my alloted spot was. Turns out they weren't busy so just choose anywhere. How good advice on where to pitch my tent.
Thankfully I'd looked at the aeriel pics so knew where I had to go.
Couldn't find a rubbish bin so it took on my bagged rubbish home in my cool box. Not much of a hardship as it allowed me to recycle.
I'm sure if there was a small bin in the shower unit numerous empty bottles wouldn't have been left in the men's dressing area.
Perhaps dealing with our own rubbish keeps the costs down. Would only be a problem if we had stayed for a week.
In fairness, perhaps I just didn't look hard enough for the bins

Vintage cars are displayed at Cotswold Motoring Museum in pretty Bourton-on-the-Water (15 minutes), where you can also picnic by the Windrush river.
