  • Gloucestershire family campsite with Cotswold Hills views
  • A 15-minute drive to Cotswold Farm Park; 30 minutes to Blenheim Palace
  • Five minutes’ drive to Stow-on-the-Wold; bus service nearby
Along with a spacious grass camping ground (as one might expect of sporting pitches), Stow-on-the-Wold Rugby Club has some seriously eye-catching views of the Cotswold Hills. This site is in a fab location just outside the historic village of Stow-on-the Wold in Gloucestershire, making it a smashing spot for family rambles, touring and gallivanting all over the Cotswolds. From the hilltop pitches you can walk for miles on local footpaths without going near a road (thus making this a cracking base for cyclists too), and if you’re keen to get on the golf course, you can book a round at Naunton Downs Golf Club (10 minutes). Eager to do some city sightseeing but prefer to leave the vehicle behind? No worries, a local bus service leaving from the local village of Oddington (a short walk away) can whisk you off to theatreland in Stratford-upon-Avon (40 minutes) or the dreaming spires of Oxford (55 minutes). Back on site, simple facilities include showers, toilets and a wifi connection (around the clubhouse) so you can keep in touch with the folk back home. Stow (five minutes’ drive) has cafés, bars and a couple of small and handy stores for basics. For more amenities, the best stop is Moreton-in-Marsh (15 minutes) for markets, pubs, supermarkets and indie shops. It’s also got a mainline rail station with services to London.

What customers say

This rugby club campsite offers a peaceful and spacious stay with beautiful Cotswold views. Guests consistently praise the clean and warm toilet and shower facilities, friendly staff, and convenient location for exploring the area. While some pitches are on a slope, most found it manageable with levelling blocks. Electric hook-up pitches can be tighter, but the overall value and relaxed atmosphere are highly appreciated, with many visitors expressing a desire to return.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked A great site with a genuinely open and spacious feel, run as part of the local rugby club. The large field gives plenty of room to spread out and, if you’re not tied to an electric hook-up, you have the freedom to pick your pitch and enjoy the relaxed, open layout of the site. The electric pitches are a different story — more of a premium spot than a spacious retreat — but that’s the trade-off for having power on tap.

The site is very well organised, with a friendly and welcoming manager who clearly knows what they’re doing. The facilities are excellent and look like they’ve had a recent refresh, so no complaints there.

The location is a winner. Stow-on-the-Wold is a proper Cotswolds gem and a brilliant base for exploring the area. You’re perfectly placed for all the usual Cotswolds delights, plus the now-famous Diddly Squat/Hawkstone/Farmers Dog triangle — ideal if you’d like to do your bit towards funding Clarkson’s next tractor purchase.

Bamford Barn is also within reach and is quite something. A place where white linen appears to be the unofficial uniform and where you can experience the unique thrill of wondering whether you’ve accidentally wandered onto the set of a very expensive lifestyle advert.

Disliked The only real downside is that the electric pitches are a bit of a squeeze. They’re smaller and packed much closer together, so if you need hook-up you’ll be sacrificing some of that lovely open-field feeling.

Stow itself can also suffer from Cotswolds traffic — the sort where you can spend longer queuing behind a Range Rover admiring a thatched cottage than you do actually getting anywhere. But that’s the price of being somewhere everyone else wants to visit too.

From the manager: Hi Paul,

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review.

It’s great to hear you enjoyed your stay and found the campsite a good base for exploring the Cotswolds! We really appreciate your balanced feedback and your comments about the friendly welcome and organisation of the site.

Thank you also for your feedback regarding the electric pitches. As you say, there’s a trade-off between having electric hook-up and the more open feel of the camping field, but we do appreciate your comments and will keep them in mind as we continue to develop the site.

We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Kind regards,

Vicky

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Views from field

Disliked We were told to pitch where we liked. As it was extremely hot we decided to park near some trees at the side of the Rugby pitch, I popped to the club house and checked that this was ok and was told yes. Then later on the site Manager came and told us the chairman was not happy for us to pitch there as the ladies team were going to use the pitch that evening. Nobody used the pitch in the 4 nights we were there so couldn't see what the problem was!!! Not near to any public transport
