Hope Valley Campsite: View from the site

General

  • Peaceful Peak District site two miles from Bamford Edge
  • A 10-minute drive to caverns; 25 minutes from Bakewell and Chatsworth
  • Children’s playground opposite; the Thornhill Trail and pub close by

Pretty is what you get at Hope Valley Campsite in the Peak District National Park. It’s pretty in the way of scenery… but also pretty darn peaceful, as the site rolls out over six acres and looks over a valley and the river Derwent. It’s also two miles from Bamford Edge (which, by the way, is half an hour’s walk away when you fancy an uphill hike above a reservoir).

Surrounded by the national park’s slopes but flat around the site, things are quite simple here in the way of facilities. There’s a water supply and portaloos, and then opposite the site, a children’s playground and space to get some games going next to the river.

There’s good access to the road when you’re ready to set off somewhere just as nice. When you’re going on foot, the Thornhill Trail might attract your attention. It starts near the site and leads the way to Ladybower Reservoir in around 40 minutes.

Pubs are pretty plentiful around this area too. You might like to stop off at the pub down in Bamford (it’s just a ten-minute walk away) or head into Castleton, where there are a larger handful of pubs 10 minutes’ drive away. Don’t worry about searching far and wide for food supplies, as there’s a farm shop and a small food shop five minutes’ drive away from the site too.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Great location and easy access to areas I wanted to visit during my stay. I’m a solo female camper and felt safe specially as this was my first time camping alone. Near end of season so were only 4 tents on-site including myself and a camper van so very very quiet. Facilities were clean and well stocked. Phone signal was great (if you’re wanting to keep in contact with the outside world) The farm owner was friendly and chatty. Would definitely stay again if I’m in the Peak District.

    Disliked:

Not really a negative by all means. The pitch was £15 per night for up to 4 ppl in one tent. Maybe consider a cheaper option for solo campers? Although this wouldn’t stop me from staying again next year.

Lovely, spacious and well-maintained campsite with clean toiletas and access to nearby scenic walks. The playground round the corner was a great bonus!

    Disliked:

Quite close to a main road so could hear some car noise. Not enough to disturb our sleep but it took a little bit away from the experience.

Super friendly campsite owners, simple facilities but kept very clean. All pitches seemed very level. Incredible location, close to Hathersage and Bamford Edge, and there's a petrol station round the corner which does hot drinks for the morning! Perfect campsite for anyone visiting the peaks for a few nights.

Local attractions

An afternoon by the lido? It’s only a five minutes’ drive to reach such a place from Hope Valley Campsite. Add five to 10 minutes onto your journey time and you could be on an underground boat trip at Speedwell Cavern (10 minutes) or taking a tour around the slate, stalagmites and stalactites at Blue John Cavern (15 minutes).

For a little stroll and some fur (or in the alpacas’ case, wool) therapy, Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park (15 minutes) may be your next stop – the animal park has skunks, meerkats and other creatures too.

As for those staple activities associated with the Peak District, a cycle down the disused railway on the Monsal Trail (20 minutes) is nicely followed by a brew and Bakewell pudding along the riverbank and medieval bridge in Bakewell (25 minutes).

There’s a stepping stones walk at Chee Dale (half an hour) or the huge grounds at Chatsworth House (25 minutes) when you’re in need of more wanderings (or time with the playgrounds and farmyard animals, in the case of the latter). Buxton (half an hour), a thermal spa town, is equal parts peaceful and historic, with a heritage trail you may want to follow instead.

Must see

  • Chatsworth (9.1 miles)
  • Haddon Hall (10.2 miles)
  • Magna Science Adventure Centre (13.7 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (14.1 miles)
  • Lyme Park (15.0 miles)
