  • Peaceful Peak District site two miles from Bamford Edge
  • A 10-minute drive to caverns; 25 minutes from Bakewell and Chatsworth
  • Children’s playground opposite; the Thornhill Trail and pub close by
Pretty is what you get at Hope Valley Campsite in the Peak District National Park. It’s pretty in the way of scenery… but also pretty darn peaceful, as the site rolls out over six acres and looks over a valley and the river Derwent. It’s also two miles from Bamford Edge (which, by the way, is half an hour’s walk away when you fancy an uphill hike above a reservoir). Surrounded by the national park’s slopes but flat around the site, things are quite simple here in the way of facilities. There’s a water supply and portable toilet, and opposite the site are a playground and some space to get some games going next to the river. There’s good access to the road when you’re ready to set off somewhere just as nice. When you’re going on foot, the Thornhill Trail might attract your attention. It starts near the site and leads the way to Ladybower Reservoir in around 40 minutes. Pubs are pretty plentiful around this area too. You might like to stop off at the pub down in Bamford (it’s just a ten-minute walk away) or head into Castleton, where there are a larger handful of pubs 10 minutes’ drive away. Don’t worry about searching far and wide for food supplies, as there’s a farm shop and a small food shop five minutes’ drive away from the site too.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Had the site completely to myself. Quiet, clean toilets, drinking water and rubbish disposal. Great location to visit so many great places in the Peak District. Been back twice now and definitely going again. Can pick up 5G remarkably.

Disliked: Nothing. No showers but that is made clear.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We will be back ! It was that best camping trip we have had. We placed our tent near the running stream which we could hear from within our tent. This just made the night away more relaxing! The site is easy to find. It wasn't over crowded like we thought it would be and everyone respected the no music rule. We were able to chill in our deck chairs and look at the stars until pretty late. It is a beautiful place to camp. Peaceful and tranquil. The owners are lovely too ! My wife has suggested that instead of coming out to the site to check tents (most people were out) you could take reg numbers on booking :) ? You could just check the non registered then and save your time.

Disliked: The toilets were clean and well stocked but as the night went on they became very iffy. This isn't a true dislike as at the end of the day your camping so what do you expect !

Liked: A good level site. Great location for walking. Quiet and peaceful with great views. Very friendly owner who comes round site everyday.

Disliked: Not having toilets or washing facilities is the only reason for not giving 5 stars but was OK for 1 or 2 nights.

Liked: The location, the toilets were clean and there was water available to fill up bottles, for cooking, and brushing teeth/washing etc. The campsite was tucked off the main road with was lovely and was close to lots of amazing hikes, quaint villages and towns, and easy to find. Local attractions

An afternoon by the lido? It’s only a five minutes’ drive to reach such a place from Hope Valley Campsite. Add five to 10 minutes onto your journey time and you could be on an underground boat trip at Speedwell Cavern (10 minutes) or taking a tour around the slate, stalagmites and stalactites at Blue John Cavern (15 minutes). For a little stroll and some fur (or in the alpacas’ case, wool) therapy, Mayfield Alpacas Animal Park (15 minutes) may be your next stop – the animal park has skunks, meerkats and other creatures too. As for those staple activities associated with the Peak District, a cycle down the disused railway on the Monsal Trail (20 minutes) is nicely followed by a brew and Bakewell pudding along the riverbank and medieval bridge in Bakewell (25 minutes). There’s a stepping stones walk at Chee Dale (half an hour) or the huge grounds at Chatsworth House (25 minutes) when you’re in need of more wanderings (or time with the playgrounds and farmyard animals, in the case of the latter). Buxton (half an hour), a thermal spa town, is equal parts peaceful and historic, with a heritage trail you may want to follow instead.
