  • Quiet and spacious site on the edge of the Peak District National Park
  • Ensuite pods each with kitchen, double bed and TV and DVD player
  • Eight miles from Gullivers Kingdom and 10 from Chatsworth House
Stake your claim for a prolonged stay at the spectacular Peak District pod place of Slate House Farm, a small countryside site set on a working farm nine miles from Chesterfield. Although small and never crowded, this lush site has proved rightly popular with guests, who wax lyrical about its vies, its setting, its facilities and its friendly vibe. The site has outstanding views over the Derbyshire countryside and is surrounded by ancient market towns, swathes of country estates and walking, cycling and mountain biking trails for intrepid adventurers. Anglers (fly and coarse) can cast off about a mile away; Matlock is within three and a half miles, and it's but a 20-minute drive from the farm to the heady sightseeing of the Heights of Abraham, where strong-minded sorts can bob about the landscape in a cable car. Slate House Farm is fably set for Peak District family days to suit all flavours too, with famed Chatsworth House within 10 miles and even more famed (to small sorts at least) Gulliver's Kingdom within eight. Alton Towers is just under an hour's drive away. The pods each have an ensuite bathroom, a small and well-equipped kitchen, double beds with mattresses, and a TV and DVD player. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed on site.

Camping pod

Liked Beautiful location with stunning views, plenty of open space, animals around the farm and a lovely fishing lake. We especially enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to be close to nature. A great place for families looking to explore the Peak District.

Disliked The main area for improvement would be the water quality and bathroom facilities, as the water had a strong metallic smell and the shower and toilet were sometimes difficult to use.

Camping pod

Liked We had a wonderful stay at Slate House Farm. The pods are lovely. Well equipped and very clean. We had a BBQ and a firepit plus a bag of marshmallows! The setting is beautiful. It is just completely surrounded by countryside. We have never camped or stayed in a pod before and I think this was a brilliant place to come to try it out. Our pod had lots of space outside for us to sit and relax and also our own picnic bench to eat at. A really big grassy area too for the kids to play. The farm has places to explore with more seating away from the main pod area and a separate field for playing football.

Disliked The only thing I would flag is that the pod was really snug for 4 - 2 adults with 2 bigger kids (10 and 12). It was a lot of juggling things around to get our beds down each night. But I guess that is the camping experience! We would still do it all again.

Camping pod

Liked Green open spaces for the kids to run about freely, beautiful views. Pod had all the little things you might need, plus some extras like marshmallows for toasting. Extra bedding stored under the bed, plenty of towels, bottles of water in the fridge.

Disliked Just a few niggles, nothing major.
Dvd player didnt work and boiler often wouldn't ignite so we were without hot water for showers or washing up on a couple of nights. We managed.

Camping pod

Liked We had a lovely stay at Slate House Farm Pod. The pod was very spacious and equipped with everything you need. We received a very warm welcome from the owners, who made us feel at home straight away.
The surroundings are absolutely amazing, with stunning views everywhere you look. There is also a lovely pond next to the pod, which made the stay even more relaxing. We especially loved seeing all the animals — ponies, horses, chickens, and baby sheep.
We had such a lovely time and would 100% recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful countryside getaway!

Disliked The mattress was a little too soft for someone with sciatica, but the owners kindly offered another mattress straight away, which we really appreciated.

Easter eggs for kids was a nice touch!

Disliked A couple of teething issues but all were resolved very quickly including a problem with the hot water, the heater and an extra bed needed.
As others have mentioned a bit of a squeeze for 4 people.

Perfect location for getting out in the Peak District.
Marshmallows and fire wood provided! Lovely touch!

Disliked Lost some water heat during the Saturday… possibly due to water pressure?
Wasn’t a problem to us and certainly did not ruin our stay.

Local attractions

As well as Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers (well, after Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers), kids of a certain trainspotting disposition might like a puff around the National Tramway Museum, set in the period village of Crich Tramway Village. Trams are here to chuff along on, there are woodland walks and a nature trail, and indoors has exhibits on 100 years of tram history as well as the interactive displays of the award-winning Stephenson Discovery Centre. As long as you don't utter the words 'stately home' too soon, kids should also like a day at Chatsworth House, where there's a farmyard and zipwiring, and Bolsover Castle, (30 minutes), the spectacular 17th-century fort with regular kid-friendly events. Somewhat more grownup times can he had at Haddon Hall, also within 30 minutes. You must def meander around the small villages of the Peak District while here too, as each are famed for their own individual thing: have tarts at Bakewell (25 minutes), hone your footballing skills at Ashbourne (40 minutes) and see the spas of Buxton, 45 minutes away.
