  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Millers Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and coin-operated showers for guests’ use (the showers require £1 coins, so please bring them with you). There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (eight person)

Liked Location was amazing, facilities were very good, farm shop and cafe were very nice to have, and staff were all very friendly.

Disliked Men’s toilets could do with a refresh, one of the cubical doors did not lock and generally felt much more run down compared to the newer women’s toilets.

Will not be returning due to the above problems.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked Fantastic location. Great Views and next to some lovely walks. Good cafe and shop.

Disliked The shower and toilet facilities were terrible. There were far too many campers for 3 showers and the fact it was a pound for 4mins was a bit of a cheek (however, this is properly done to make sure people don't use them for too long). Same situation with the toilets. They need to invest in facilities if they want to have a campsite that supports hundreds of people.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Good location with good pub on site
Close to Monsal Trail
Clean site with plenty of space
Quiet site with pitches far enough apart (can choose your own)

Disliked Poor facilities- not enough toilets
No hot water( and barely any cold water) to wash dishes. I’ve never had to queue for dish washing facilities whilst camping before

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Overall our stay was brilliant, site was very busy but it’s a pick your own pitch site which we liked however if arriving later in the day pitches can be limited.
Quite a lot of big groups but didn’t cause us any issues with noise etc. Spice girls tribute in the Cow Shed was great!
Would happily return but possibly on a quieter weekend when there isn’t an event on due to the below!

Disliked Not enough toilets for the number of bookings they were taking, especially with all fields being packed on Friday/ Saturday night!
Sunday morning there was a long queue for the women’s toilets and they became dirty, blocked and had no toilet paper very quickly! It was a shame as we really enjoyed our stay but feel the facilities can’t cope with the number of campers, even if people are trying to be respectful and not use too much water/ being quick in the bathrooms.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked The cafe and shop facility were one of the main reasons I chose to stay here again. Once again the food and service were excellent.

Disliked I had hoped some investment and been put in to the toilet, shower and washing up facilities. Unfortunately they had deteriorated. Of the four showers one was out of order and for the amount of people on the site was simply not enough. The men's toilets were poor of the four two did not have locking doors and then the cistern was very slow in refilling from the previous person which meant a long wait before you could flush. The washing up area was v poor. Water was at a trickle and hot water ran out. There was also a light which looked like it had a live wire showing. Another area that was poor. Was the drive from the cafe up to the campsite. It was at the point where a large number of cars struggled and wheels span and stones were been thrown which could hurt someone. It's a shame as it's a great location with some real positives.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked Great views, pretty shop and bar.

Disliked There are large groups of young adults all over this site. Although the advert states otherwise, it is obviously ignored.

I booked for 2 nights to take my young kids on a camping break. Had to repeatedly ask groups to stop swearing, every other word was f*&k. There's no strict pitches, it's more a free for all, which lends itself to little clubs opening up all over the place.

This was evident at night, when it turned into lots of alcohol fuelled parties, or just one massive one on the second night. I had to complain both nights for the site staff to sort it out as People were climbing on cars, drink driving to the toilets or just urinating over the field was bad enough, but the constant shouting, swearing and screaming from the drunks was appalling. This obviously woke up any babies and children, meaning you had screaming kids in the mixer at 1am too.
Then throw in car alarms and music with a splash of mobile phones, anyone managing to sleep needs medical attention.

Obviously being asked to keep the noise down just annoyed them, and they got worse, showing complete lack of decency and respect.
I gave up completely at 1am and just packed up the tent in the dark, and drove home as neither my kids or I had slept in 2 days. Really awful experience. Would not recommend.

Shepherd's hut

Liked The hut i stayed in. Cozy and warm overlooked the cattle which was lovley

Disliked The food on site. Had a.meal the first night and had a poorly tummy in the night. And also got a breakfast bap and the bacon looked very strange and didn't finish it. Was to greesey also. When I went to checkout 2 members of staff where having a very lengthy conversation at the desk and just ignored me whilst I was waiting . And the bunk house was full of lads. Which was next to my hut and they all parked there cars right in front of my hut. And I had to have my door closed all the time and very loud when they had a few.beers.

Liked Views, staff, clean toilets and showers

Disliked Field has no flat spots, it's at the top of a valley with no protection from the wind. Showers are charged at £1 for 4 minutes. Farm shop isn't great. They definitely like to fill the field with as many people as the can. Any playing for the space for the kids disappeared quickly. 100+ people 5 toilets.

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Millers Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
