  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Millers Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and coin-operated showers for guests’ use (the showers require £1 coins, so please bring them with you). There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Laid back campsite, basic off grid. Special events in the cow shed barn are great.
If you are coming & expect all bells & whistles, this is not the campsite for you. If you are coming for a break from it all in a campsite with amazing views & a great no nonsense host, you really should visit.
A genuinely dog friendly site, allowed in all places.

Disliked Nothing to dislike

Non-electric grass tent pitch (six person)

Liked The stunning location and views

Disliked We arrived Friday lunchtime to a relatively empty field. We went out in the afternoon and came back to tents either side of us, with the guy ropes almost touching ours. Cars parked almost in front of our porch, it felt like we were camping in a car park.

There was an overflow field, but noone seemed to be directed to it. While I love a pitch anywhere site, this was ridiculous and the campsite didn't seem to care about the close proximity of the tents creating a major fire hazard! It also meant we had to try and get our 4 Yr old to sleep, with the tent next door to us loudly swearing with every other word.

Unfortunately, this campsite seems to be the place to go for younger groups who want to party. Cars zoomed around the campsite way too fast, making it unsafe for our son to play out much. There was also a lot of dog poo left around the campsite, which I've never had a problem with on other campsites.

Given how overbooked the campsite was, the staff seemed to be unprepared for it. The toilets were all out of toilet roll in the morning, with no supplies provided until they were cleaned once, later in the day.

Disliked No toilet roll several times, too busy campsite was not taken into account by farm to add extra toilet roll/hand towels. Only 4 toilets and as they are contained units with sink inside, there was often queues. Also they make you book a pitch based on size and charge more, however there are no set pitches so you are not guaranteed space. There were no smaller pitches left so booked bigger one and got no space! Not happy with this as it should be based on what you take if that is the case!

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Good grassy field for Camping
Quiet good bunch of campers
Location great for hiking
Great onsite bar and farm shop
Friendly, welcoming staff
Showers were pretty good and 4 mins for a pound was enough time.

Disliked Toilets not kept in good condition over the weekend. Mens toilet prefab building too small, difficult for people using the sinks blocking access to the cubicles. Ran out of toilet paper in all cubicles.
Women's toilets not clean and no toilet paper or paper towels.
Showers needed a floor squeegee to help keep clean.
Pot washing facilities not big enough for number of campers. Intermittent hot water supply and pressure terrible. One blocked up sink obviously no one checking.
Gravel path on the way up to the upper campsite bumpy and seen cars losing traction due to pot holes.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked Views are stunning. Staff are all very friendly. Good selection of drinks. Showers are powerful. Plenty of good walking routes straight from the site.

Disliked The showers are good but £1 for four minutes flies by. Gents toilets are a little run down and can be troublesome to flush. But cleaned regularly. And I managed to get a shower to be fair, potentially being over fussy.

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Millers Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
