  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Miller's Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and coin-operated showers for guests’ use (the showers require £1 coins, so please bring them with you). There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Shepherd's hut

Liked Overall site experience- live band on, good drinks choices, dog friendly everywhere, helpful and friendly staff went above and beyond to make my experience excellent. The facilities and comfort of the hut were phenomenal.

Disliked Showers are limited (4 available and were very busy) and paid for (£1 for 4 minutes) but this turned out to be good in a way as it helped limit how long people spent in them.

Liked The view

Disliked The toilets weren’t well kept, blocked and no toilet roll also incredibly unhygienic.
This was reported to check in and nothing was done 3 hours later when I went back.
Although we booked in advance it was absolutely heaving and they kept letting people in. Families were doing laps and laps around the campsite trying to find anywhere to squeeze in. It was that full that it was tent to tent, bumper to bumper. It was quite obvious the campsite owners were only conscious of money and not safety. Had there been a fire (which fire pits can be rented) it would’ve been disastrous.
This point can’t exactly be helped but the roads around the campsite were very dusty and covered absolutely everything in dust. Just something to be conscious of. Additionally I’d say 70% of the site is on a slope. Showers also cost £1 for 4 minutes.

From the manager: Hi Anonymous,

Thanks for sharing your views. On the facilities, please let me say that this photo is an extreme and not reflective of our facilities as a whole. The toilet paper on the floor was placed by other campers to mop up a leaking water pipe to the sink taps, which was reported to us at check in and fixed shortly after.

I personally cleaned and restocked all facilities as soon as any shortages were reported to me. If they had run out of supplies again by the end of the afternoon, we would have happily returned to restock again as we understand our facilities get a lot of use over the bank holiday. The toilet blockage was caused by someone snapping the flush handle - this was also replaced.

All bookings over the bank holiday weekend were pre-booked, we didn't let people in on a whim. However, our site is a lot busier at these times, as is the rest of the Peak District on a sunny bank holiday. We are very conscious of fire safety and make regular patrols of the site to ensure safe use of firepits and barbecues throughout the day and night.

As you kindly mentioned, we cannot be held responsible for dust on rural roads during dry weather.

On the gradient - some parts of our site are on a slight rise, which we make an effort to make people aware of. We are located in the Peak district.

The cost of our showers is advertised in two different locations on our Pitchup listing, and as described on your check in sheet this is due to past misuse. I apologise if this came as a shock.

Overall, I am sorry that you didn't get the most out of your stay with us, but in future I would suggest avoiding bank holidays in tourist based areas to avoid further disappointment.

Thanks
The Team @ Beltonville

Liked Everything as normal 😊
Been here a few times now and have never been disappointed.
All the staff are welcoming and friendly, even over a very busy bank holiday weekend.
As it was a beer festival they had music on in the Cow Shed from 3pm until closing. This was at a small extra cost but definitely worth it as the bands were great.

Liked Location was beautiful. Atmosphere was great. They had a beer festival on at the time so music etc. Toilets good. Farm shop was stocked with all the things we'd forgotten. Breakfast looked delicious. Good coffee and cakes. Loved they did 2 gluten AND dairy free different cake options. Flapjack was divine. Had a lovely time. All staff were really friendly and couldn't do enough to help you.

Disliked Wish we'd realised about the £1 coin showers.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (XL)

Liked Friendly staff. Great cafe with delicious breakfast

Disliked Not enough toilets or showers for the site size. Free pitching meant that although we paid for an XL pitch, we had to squeeze onto a small pitch.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thanks for your review and kind words about our cafe and staff. On the facilities, we are currently working on a new toilet and shower area pending planning progression. Apologies on any confusion regarding pitches, we charge per unit based on ground coverage rather than per pitch as we are a free pitching site, so an XL pitch is based on the physical size of the tent. We do receive many more bookings than usual over bank holidays, especially with good weather, but away from these times our site is much more peaceful.

Many thanks,
The Team @ Beltonville

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The location was great and some nice views around which was great. Lots of trails nearby. The cafe was great to have there if you don't fancy cooking breakfast or lunch. Staff was lovely.
The cafe had a few good vegetarian options so that was great.
Access to drinking water.
Could park by our tent.
Good check in and out times.

Disliked Facilities were not the best. Only 4 female toilets and most of the time either one out of order or they were all in really bad condition. Showers weren't great either and extra paid. Extremely busy the weekend we went. We came just after 1pm and if we came any later we would struggle to find good-ish spot even for our little tent.

It seems to be more of a party campsite. Some loud groups around play music and being loud late in the evening. If we came with friends we might have had better experience but for us as a couple who wanted to chill after day of hiking it was a bit too loud.

Disliked Toilets & showers. 200 tents booked on this bank holiday, 5 ladies toilets & 4 showers to cater for all! Absolutely ridiculous! Will not be returning!

From the manager: Hi,

Thanks for your review. A new toilet and shower block is currently underway, the only restriction being planning requirements from the local council. Aside from the issues with facilities, I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your stay.

Many thanks,
The Team @ Beltonville

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Miller's Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
