  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Camping pod (ensuite)

Liked Gorgeous site. Well kept. Very clean! The staff went above and beyond, were welcoming and so helpful.

Disliked Really nit picking, but just a couple of hooks to hang things on in the pod would be great but absolutely nothing major!

Could be nice with better designed and cleaner washing facilities.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Well placed near Dovedale and Tissington Trail. Good playground for the children.

Disliked Tourer pitch we were first offered was a very uneven mud patch. Eventually managed to get a different pitch. Still a bit uneven and muddy but OK. Toilet block not good. Ladies side dirty and smelly needing more regular cleaning. Both ladies and gents cold with no hot water day one. Even when heating back on, hot water never actually hot. At best comes through warm. When using sinks, nowhere to hang a towel or clothes. When using shower cubicles they are small with just one clothes hook close to the shower so clothes and shoes get wet when you use the shower.
Dish washing area outside would benefit from a light.

Camping pod (ensuite)

Liked Pool is great. The staff are all so helpful. The pods are really good value and all get their own shower and toilet.

Disliked The sheets always come off the bed. Take an extra pillow as they are very thin.

Camping pod (ensuite)

Liked Great location, minute walk to the Tissington Trail. Pods were great for families, staff are friendly, swimming pool on site (would recommend booking all your slots on the day of arrival). The private ensuite was perfect and own washing up facilities located just at the back of your pod.

Disliked The beds are really uncomfortable, instead of a protective sheet the mattresses have plastic protective stitched in the bed which is awful, the beds were made on arrival with a flat bed sheet but the moment you turned over in the bed the flat sheet comes off the bed really uncomfortable and terrible night sleep. The ensuite private toilet each time we went there was loads of water which could have only been coming from the toilet, when we checked out we mentioned it and was told ‘that was only resealed this week’ we was never told when checking in, had we have known there was a possible issue we could have made them aware it was still a problem.

Would visit if staying in one of the sites caravans but not a tourer.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Park was fantastic for the kids, really big and the kids loved it. Swimming pool was a nice assett would be nice to be open a little later.

Disliked Found the shop expensive , but main issue was the pitch themselves , we found these super boggy and muddy, appreciate the weather can’t be controlled but would revisit on this basis.
Disappointed in the toilets and showers.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
