  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

Camping pod

Liked Fabulous clean well kept Park, friendly staff, easy booking in process, the place is in a Amazing place, one thing needs highlighting the ensuite pod's are not ensuite, you have your own shower and toilet but you have to come out of the pod and walk round the back to a separate unit, didn't bother me but maybe others.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Beautiful Bell tent, clean tidy & the surrounding area is just perfect for a relaxing break. The kids enjoyed the swimming pool, super easy to book & a great added bonus.

Disliked The only thing I have to say is the quality of the mattresses in the bell tents, there more like a camping mat rather than a “mattress”. Quick trip to the range & £15 later on an air bed & we were more than happy.

Powered grass tent site

Liked The site was nice and quiet.
Good swimming pool that was very useful when raining.
Nice local pubs for food and drink.

Disliked We asked numerous times to be placed next to our friends so that the kids could play. We were told a note had been added to our booking. We ended up in completely different fields. They had plenty of room around them but when we asked if we could switch we were told that they don't have the power to do this, only head office do.

Staff could do with being empowered to be a little flexible.

We were on a pitched tent plot which, at £68 a night, seemed very expensive for effectively a patch of grass. It wasn't much more expensive to rent a pod with ensuite.

Powered concrete slab caravan site (no awning)

Liked The pool. And the playground.

Disliked Quite a few things. There was only one hook with three pegs in the showers. Nothing to put your glasses on for example. The toilets were not clean. I think because of the many children that stayed.
What i disliked most was the lack of wifi. With the money you pay per night you would at least expect wifi. It was the most expensive stay per night that I have ever had in the whole of Europe.

Camping pod

Liked Really lovely site! The staff were great, and everything was clean and fresh. The pods were perfect for what we needed. Our own toilet and shower were an added bonus and great for the little ones.
The kids loved the onsite park, and we did a fab walk with them via the Tissington Trail. The pool was easy to book.

Disliked It would have been lovely to be able to grab a cup of tea whilst watching the kids play in the park, and the shop was expensive, but that is to be expected. Overall, no complaints, it was a fantastic stay.

Powered concrete slab caravan site (no awning)

Liked Lovely views and modern facilities, good play area.

Disliked Sloped touring pitches under trees so not much sun. Pool has to be booked, not much availability and shuts early. Toilets hardly cleaned, bins overflowing and always toilet paper on the floor. Rules not enforced, kids on electric bikes and scooters and dogs roaming off lead occasionally fighting!

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
