Cow from the farm

General

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Feed the animals, hunt for eggs and walk the trails
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm

Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely little farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close... and have a splendid time while you're doing it.

The pigs and goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café.

In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought right from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. On Saturdays in the summer months you can join in the farm’s mighty communal barbecue and singsong... or just hum along if you're not much of a crooner; singing opportunities are not for everyone...

I absolutely loved this place. Prior to this I had only used my tent a few times just as a place to get my head down at music weeks needs in Europe. This time I came for some peace and quiet to 're charge my batteries due to a fairly hectic lifestyle. I was completely bowled over. This was much better than I expected. So much so I have 're booked for another night this weekend. The setting is beautiful, the farm itself has everything you need. And at night when I turned in, all I could hear were the owls and other nocturnal creatures. Fantastic. Thank you very much.

Great campsite on a fun working farm with loads for young children.09/01/2019

The campsite being set on a working farm was such a bonus! Our 15 month old son loved seeing all the animals. The site was large with enough shaded areas around one side, which was good for those early mornings! We also liked the fact that there was a cafe and pub on site, for those times when you didn’t fancy cooking on your stove. The compost toilets and showers were always clean and tidy, which was a relief.

    Disliked:

The farm shop drink fridge wasn’t working when we were there, so the drinks we bought weren’t cold. Also, it would’ve been handy for them to sell a few food options for toddlers/babies.

We stayed here August bh weekend, very hot weekend. We booked a stsy in the woods which was perfect as it kept the temp cool, it was quiet and peaceful and wild camping at its best..woken by the sound of birds, cows and sheep! ... Our son loved being in the woods. The compost toilets were fairly close..... And the main farm was 10/15 mins walk away. The farm shop stocked a wide range a goods and we had breakfast in the cafe which was lovely..... Gorge sunset from the main field.... A real getaway weekend.

    Disliked:

The road through the woods takes it out on your car!
The main toilets are a good walk away and we only found the showers on the last day.
The farm shop is lovely but I felt it missed a trick not having a well stocked fridge with wine, beer and soft drinks.... Seemed the fridge was either not working or on.
Cafe was gorgeous but was heaving on bh weekend so was a fair wait.
The local pub stopped serving food at six on bh Sunday.... Discovered this after trekking up then had to trek back and get in the car to find somewhere else.... Did find the bull pub which was great.

We was tucked away in the woodlands our set up was private and perfect, with hay stacks, camp fire, we saw bats at night, could hear owls, very peaceful, we had such a great camping experience it was like a holiday! Baby Pigs were so cute! The best things in life are the simple little things, kids made mud pies! Was amazing.

    Disliked:

the one thing I could say was the toilets could do with an update but still it didn’t really bother me, there was also porter loos which were very very clean so that’s good.

When we arrived at Church Farm we found the staff very freindly and helpful from the start. We pitched the tent and had everything we needed. The shop was well stocked with most things that you could need at a good price. The tent area had plenty of toilets and showers. And the farm was really a good surprise and lots to do. I would highly recommend this place to a family and will be going back in the near future.

This was linked to a farm which meant there was so much to do with our toddler, the chance to experience the countryside and a working farm at the same time was brilliant for our city-child.
It was our first time camping so being able to rent a bell tent and with the on-site shops, cafe etc meant we could get anything that we'd forgotten.

We are now investigating getting a tent of our own and will be back

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too).

Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history.

Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles).

Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
