Church Farm: Bell tent glamping

General

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Feed the animals, hunt for eggs and walk the trails
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm

Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely little farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close... and have a splendid time while you're doing it.

The pigs and goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café.

In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought right from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. On Saturdays in the summer months you can join in the farm’s mighty communal barbecue and singsong... or just hum along if you're not much of a crooner; singing opportunities are not for everyone...

Dogs are welcome at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The play area is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 et 31/12.

The games room is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

prices in the farm shop very high (£9.50 for a four pack of lager, £1 for a small tonic water etc), woodland close to road, pitch a bit too expensive.

Added extras! So many things to pay for in addition to basic pitch. Unlike their website claims you have to buy entire campfire package - a permit is not an option.

From the manager...

Hello and thank you for your feedback.

We did previously offer permit only options but people were burning tuff that we just don't allow on site so we had to move this.

I will ensure the team update the website to reflect the change and sorry for the confusion.

Thank you

From the manager...

Hello Begum,

Thank you for your feedback here and directly to us in response to our feedback request. We have replied to your email with the below, please come back to us via the email.

We are so disappointed to learn that you did not enjoy your stay. It would be really helpful to understand what you mean by the tent area was not maintained so we can address any issues. With regards to the loos, I sincerely hope they were not dirty, we have a cleaning team working around the clock over the busy periods to keep the loos clean. The torrential rain on the Friday seemed to make some of the compost loos smell, but the chemical loos were fine.

Unfortunately, the sound does carry at night, it’s a shame our night team were not made aware of the noise as this would have been addressed.

Thank you

The farm animals were great for the kids, and the amenities were good.

    Disliked:

The camping fields were all on slopes, which isn't ideal, and the requirements to pay £12.50 for reseeding of the lawn if you have a fire, seemed quite expensive. Fire material (firestarters, kindling etc) was very expensive at the shop. The campsite is strong on their no amplified music message, but they do not enforce it.

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too).

Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history.

Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles).

Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
