Feed the animals around the farm

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Free farm entry for farm trails, woodland play and daily activities
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm
Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely 170-acre working farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close… and hopefully have a splendid time while you're doing it. There's usually a charge for visitors to get stuck in to the farm's activities, but camping guests will get free entry, so they can wander the farm trails, hit the woodland play area or join in the daily activities. The pigs, goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will most likely love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café. In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. Camping rotates around several fields throughout the season so that the grass can always be kept at its best. On-site facilities include outdoor gas showers, cold water sinks and chemical and compost toilets. Dogs are welcome (for no extra charge) at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked were flexible to allow us to camp near our friends who were in a hut not a tent pitch

Disliked the website is not clear that you get free access to the farm if you camp there so we spent a lot of money on unnecessary tickets. Under the Luton flightpath so can be a bit noisy with planes at night.

Primitive forest floor tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Beautiful woodland setting; free unlimited access to the farm; an orchard, herb garden and tunnels of growing fruit and veg to explore; pub right next door; on-site crafts sessions and beauty treatments available; small essentials/gift shop, and a cafe. All staff were super friendly and helpful. I made my own candles at the House of Craft and Calm on-site and the lady running it was super lovely. Prices very reasonable considering the beautiful location.

Disliked The outdoor shower hut was surprisingly not too cold, however the water was so hot that it damaged my skin and scalp and due to the temp I wasn't able to actually stand under the stream, just basically splash myself.
Access to the farm was great, however you weren't allowed to pet any of the animals and often couldn't get nice photos of them either due to the electric fences getting in the way. Couldn't hand-feed them either, just drop food in a tube to slide down into a trough.
I found the map I was given to be a little confusing.
The pub was very close-by but never seemed to be open whenever I walked past, despite the opening hours on Google stating they should have been open.

From the manager: HI Amy,

Thank you so much for your feedback about your stay – we’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the woodland setting, the farm access, and the activities on site. We will pass your comments on to the team.

I’m sorry to hear that a few aspects didn’t meet expectations. Regarding the outdoor showers, we do aim to maintain a comfortable temperature, but they can occasionally fluctuate. Our team are always happy to assist if this happens, and we also have indoor showers available on the main site for a more consistent experience. Sorry for any inconvenience caused during your stay.

In terms of the farm, we completely understand your comments. For health and safety reasons, we don’t allow petting or hand-feeding of the animals. The fencing is in place to protect the animals (for example from wildlife such as foxes), and we’ve added bunting to make the boundaries more visible while still allowing guests to view them safely.

Thank you as well for your feedback on the map – we’ll review this to see how it can be made clearer for future guests.

With regards to the pub, we’re sorry for the inconvenience caused. It should have been open in line with its advertised hours, so we will be looking into this with them directly.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, as it helps us continue to improve. We hope to welcome you back again in the future.

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too). Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history. Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles). Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
