  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Free farm entry for farm trails, woodland play and daily activities
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm
Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely 170-acre working farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close… and hopefully have a splendid time while you're doing it. There's usually a charge for visitors to get stuck in to the farm's activities, but camping guests will get free entry, so they can wander the farm trails, hit the woodland play area or join in the daily activities. The pigs, goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will most likely love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café. In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. Camping rotates around several fields throughout the season so that the grass can always be kept at its best. On-site facilities include outdoor gas showers, cold water sinks and chemical and compost toilets. Dogs are welcome (for no extra charge) at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

From the manager: Hi both, Thank you so much for your lovely review! As a small not-for-profit business, we thrive on word of mouth reviews like yours. We are very humbled to know that you enjoyed your stay with us, and that the cafe and restaurant were to your liking, and that our staff were friendly and helpful. As for the bathrooms - we do appreciate your comment on this as it is one of the many challenges, as we do have many facilities across the entire campsite we try to keep clean at all times - but the fact that it's on a farm sometimes makes this a challenge. We do check and clean the facilities twice a day but it is something we are constantly trying to improve. We hope this didn't impact your stay - and if it did, we send our sincerest apologies. Thanks again for leaving such a lovely review, and for coming to our peaceful corner of Hertfordshire! We hope that you consider staying with us again, and until then - we look forward to your arrival. Thanks, Ollie

Liked: A lovely eco friendly farm. The woodland camping site was excellent and really felt like a wilderness experience. Listening to the sound of the wind in the trees and waking up to bird song made it a special experience.

Unpowered forest floor tent site (woodland)

Liked: Our second stay at Church Farm and even more impressed this time. It’s such a spacious lay laid out site and so varied - pitches are busy or quiet, woodland or grass - the choices are endless and all so well laid out. Compost toilets and showers are spotless. The showers are brilliant. I’ve stayed on a lot of farm campsites and it always seems they’re a little too busy to keep on top of everything. Church Farm is the opposite- immaculately clean, so well organised and well kept, from the animals, the pitches, the glamping options, the playgrounds for kids, the shop, the facilities, everything! . It really is such a great place to visit. Lovely walks in the surrounding countryside. Wonderful evenings by a campfire with plenty of wood and supplies to buy at the shop. Looking forward to our next visit!

Liked: Lovely farm and staff, plenty to do for the kids, nice pub close by

Disliked: Some rubbish was left in our pitch by the previous people which attracted a lot of wasps, Supplies in the shop are very overpriced

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Chris, glad you enjoyed it overall. We do check for rubbish every 24 hours, sorry if we missed something. But do contact us in the event that something isn't right on any future visit, we will always make someone available to come fix it. You can imagine, we are constantly checking prices in the shop with similar outlets in rural areas. On balance and with higher overheads and difficult economic conditions we feel that our prices compare well, especially for free range, high welfare meat and organically grown produce. Hope to see you again soon!

Cabin

Liked: The site was very clean and lovely to camp

Disliked: Showers not very good cafe not very good farm shop don't sell a lot and not a lot of meat for sale

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Martin, glad you enjoyed it overall. We do our best to maintain stock levels and a broad range of free range and organic produce in the shop, sorry we didn't have what you wanted on this occasion. For future visits, please be aware that it's possible to order meat in advance on the website, to ensure we have something for you. The gas showers in the field are not to everyone's taste, but they reflect the rustic nature of camping on a working farm where full and permanent shower blocks are difficult to obtain planning for. We do have more 'indoorsy' showers in the buildings near the main yard. Do feel free to contact us directly with anything specific you think we could do to improve with the cafe? Thanks once more and hope to see you again soon.

Perfect stay!

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too). Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history. Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles). Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.
