Church Farm: Bell tent glamping

General

  • Among fields and woods on a working farm in Hertfordshire countryside
  • Free farm entry for farm trails, woodland play and daily activities
  • Café, bakery, shop and pub, all serving fresh produce from the farm

Amid the tiny villages, broad fields and winding lanes of Hertfordshire, the friendly site of Church Farm is a place of many opportunities. Move to a different pace with a stay at this lovely 170-acre working farm, where you see farming and wildlife up close… and have a splendid time while you're doing it.

There's usually a charge for visitors to get stuck in to the farm's activities, but camping guests will get free entry, so they can wander the farm trails, hit the woodland play area or join in the daily activities. The pigs, goats, sheep and hens on this mixed eco farm may well come and say hello; the whole family can join in the feeding sessions and kids will love foraging through the undergrowth to find eggs for breakfast (have them with just-baked bread from the farm’s ovens). Or let someone else do breakfast for a change: the team dishes them up all day at the café.

In the evenings, build your own campfire and grill bangers bought right from the farm shop or head to the village pub for home-cooked and locally sourced food. On Saturdays in the summer months you can join in the farm’s mighty communal barbecue and singsong... or just hum along if you're not much of a crooner; singing opportunities are not for everyone...

Camping rotates around several fields throughout the season so that the grass can always be kept at its best. On site facilities include outdoor gas showers, cold water sinks and chemical and compost toilets.

Dogs are welcome (for no extra charge) at this ecological nonprofit farm, which also focuses on providing training and work experience for people with special needs, and are allowed in the farm café, shop, on the site and in the local pub.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Minimum spacing of 10 metres between pitches.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

The play area is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The grocery shop is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

The games room is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Reception is unmanned after 6 p.m.. Please inform the park while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback. Many apologies about the amplified music playing, this strictly not allowed and I will pass this on to make sure the night staff spot this next time.

Perfect combination of being outdoors but also having a cafe serving lovely lattes and delicious food! The egg collecting, tractor ride and goat walking were wonderful - just wish they were longer!

    Disliked:

We had older children and it would be nice if they could have a bit more independence - every time they were walking alone (not doing anything wrong) - they were told to go find their adults. Given we are from London, it was strange that they can walk on their own in the City but not in the great outdoors. Essentially they had to stay on the campsite when the adults were doing all the boring things such as cleaning, etc. Also, the Jolly Wagoner - the pub near - served dismal food although the cafe was delicious.

Hello Stella,

Thank you for your feedback, I am afraid the no music rule is mainly due to our neighbours but we do understand your comment.

Very helpful staff: We forgot a few things and were lent items.
Lovely shop and open quite late. Usefuly because of the above...
Nice cafe. It was great to have coffee, bacon baps etc in the morning.
Location - it feels remote and in the country, but doesn't take long to get there from major motorways.
    Toilets were clean
Tickets for the farm included in the price - the kids loved feeding the animals.

    Disliked:

Making a fire is a bit pricey. We bought the kit, but the bag of wood didn't last very long.

From the manager...

Hi Barry,

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. we do usually advise the bag of logs may need to be topped up during your stay so i am sorry if you wasn't told that.

Thank you

Local attractions

Take the woodland trails on the site to spot the wildlife of the area, such as kites circling the skies, bats flitting in the trees, and barn owls hooting at night as you're getting toasty by the campfire (look out for badgers too).

Off site, head to the Tudor pile of Knebworth Castle (20 minutes’ drive), to roam around the palatial house and grand gardens, have a brontosaurus encounter on the life-sized Dinosaur Trail and top it off by swinging like monkeys in the adventure playground. Or you can all reach for the skies at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (30 minutes), to get up close to Spitfires and Vulcans while wandering through a century of aviation history.

Medieval Cambridge (45 minutes) makes a good day trip, where you can punt down the River Cam past the stately colleges, or picnic in the botanic gardens. Open-top tour buses make a sedate way to see the sights, or you can hire bikes (watch out for cobbles).

Though part of the university, the Museum of Earth Sciences is geared towards young minds and hands-on experiences, from fossils to earthquakes and dinosaurs to volcanoes. After discovering the secrets of rocks, you could all try climbing: not many hills round here but Clip n Climb Cambridge has 20 indoor challenges for beginners and mountain goats alike.

Must see

  • Knebworth House (10.1 kilometres)
