Munich? Salzburg? And how about a lovely-looking lake (the third biggest in Germany), for sailing, boating and walks or bike rides around its shore? Have the heap at Bavaria's Campingplatz Mariengrund, excellently placed in green and peaceful countryside between Munich and Salzburg, a mere couple of kilometres from the vast lake of Chiemsee. Salzburg is 45 minutes' drive from this pretty place and Munich just under an hour, both niftily reached via the A8 motorway close to the site. This is a popular area too for outdoorsy and active types: Chiemsee lake is the biggest in Bavaria (so hefty it's often nicknamed the Bavarian Sea) and the area around the lake, the Chiemgau, is one of the most visited recreational spots in the state. For clambers, the Chiemgau mountains are reachable via hiking paths starting directly from the site. As it's just off the motorway near the exit for Bernau am Chiemsee, Campingplatz Mariengrund is in a handy setting for stopovers on your way north or south, or to settle down at for some time to venture around the region's cities, countryside and attractions. A petrol station where you can fuel up or pick up the required motorway vignettes is just opposite the site. Mariengrund has a takeaway. Dogs are most welcome and can join you on site for free: they'll probably enjoy the countryside around here very much too.

Liked I stayed with my two children in a tent for the night.
It's convenient when you're on a long journey that you can make a stop near the motorway.

Clean restrooms and showers at no extra charge.

Disliked At night, the car alarm went off. My car was broken into at night and a backpack with documents was stolen. Take all valuables with you to the tent.
In terms of safety, proximity to the highway has its consequences.

From the manager: Es tut uns leid, dass Ihnen das passiert ist. Jedoch ist es seit Jahrzehnten der erste Fall auf unserem Platz. Dank der schnellen und professionellen Arbeit unser deutschen Polizei wurde Ihr Rucksack samt Unterlagen auf der naheliegenden Wiese schnell gefunden.

Liked Der Platz war klein und gemütlich. Die Zeltwiese war separat und man war relativ für sich.

Disliked Die im Internet angegebenen Koch- und Sitzgelegenheiten waren leider nicht vorhanden.
Auch war leider die Autobahn deutlich zu hören.
Leider gab es auch keine Waschkabinen mit Waschbecken.

Liked Schone douches en toiletten. Informatie bij aankomst was helder. Prima plaats voor overnachting tijdens doorreis, stroom is aanwezig en je kan aangekoppeld blijven staan. En ja, de snelweg hoor je, maar hebben wij niet als vervelend ervaren. Dit kun je ook wel inschatten als je er naartoe rijdt als je ziet hoe rap je weer op de snelweg zit.

Liked Det kneb lidt med muligheden for strøm på telt området, ellers en fin plads.
En bonus havde været at græsset var slået lidt kortere, så man ikke skulle gå i vådt græs. Rigtig fin plads til en hurtig overnatning og der er fine faciliteter.

Disliked Leider war eine Gruppe sehr anstrengender mit auf dem Platz ,die der Meinung waren mit ihren " Damen " zusammen in den Frauen Bereich zu gehen um dort was auch immer unter den Duschen zu machen. Auf beschweren hin hat man dort mal geschaut und mit der Aussage, die Welt ist Bunt geworden angefertigt worden. Ein absolutes No-Go. Am nächsten Morgen lag sogar was in der Dusche was absolut ekelhaft war.

To the lake first, to learn the ropes at the sailing school, take out a pedalo or rowing boat, plunge in for some swimming, or have a stroll or bike ride around the water's edge. Less actively, take a paddle steamer trip for a scenic cruise around the water, or uncover your easel and paints to join in with the many Chiemseemaler artists who have painted the landscape here. Chiemsee has three islands, the biggest two of which (the Fraueninsel and the Herreninsel) can be reached all year round by the passenger ferry of the Chiemsee-Schifffahrt. A monastery of Benedicitine nuns has stood on the Fraueninsel since the eighth century; meanwhile, Herreninsel has two castles, one a former monastery and the other – once home to Ludwig II – modelled on the Palace of Versailles. Cycling and hiking trails from Chiemsee to Chiemgau can be accessed directly from the site.
