Munich? Salzburg? And how about a lovely-looking lake (the third biggest in Germany), for sailing, boating and walks or bike rides around its shore? Have the heap at Bavaria's Campingplatz Mariengrund, excellently placed in green and peaceful countryside between Munich and Salzburg, a mere couple of kilometres from the vast lake of Chiemsee. Salzburg is 45 minutes' drive from this pretty place and Munich just under an hour, both niftily reached via the A8 motorway close to the site. This is a popular area too for outdoorsy and active types: Chiemsee lake is the biggest in Bavaria (so hefty it's often nicknamed the Bavarian Sea) and the area around the lake, the Chiemgau, is one of the most visited recreational spots in the state. For clambers, the Chiemgau mountains are reachable via hiking paths starting directly from the site. As it's just off the motorway near the exit for Bernau am Chiemsee, Campingplatz Mariengrund is in a handy setting for stopovers on your way north or south, or to settle down at for some time to venture around the region's cities, countryside and attractions. A petrol station where you can fuel up or pick up the required motorway vignettes is just opposite the site. Mariengrund has a takeaway. Dogs are most welcome and can join you on site for free: they'll probably enjoy the countryside around here very much too.

Liked Die Atmosphäre auf dem Campingplatz ist sehr angenehm, dank des sehr netten Wirtes, der beispielsweise die Gelegenheit bietet, ein kühles Getränk und eine Pizza zu genießen. Auch für die Vierbeiner ist gesorgt, denn es gibt eine extra Hundewiese. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die sehr sauberen Sanitäranlagen auf diesem Campingplatz - ein großes Plus

Disliked Die Lage des Campingplatzes kann unter Umständen ein Mehrwert oder auch ein Nachteil sein, weil dieser nahe an der Autobahn liegt und somit etwas geräuschintensiver sein kann. Es kann jedoch auch ein Vorteil sein, wenn man nur auf der Durchreise ist.

Liked Easy access to & from main motorway (autobahn 8). Just drove in selected our spot and set up. No fuss. Superb shower facilities. Toilets and wash areas were very clean. They also provided hand soap and toilet paper which is unusual for German campsites.

Disliked Too close to motorway (road noise is significant). Pitches were a bit yucky a mixture of mud grass and stones resembling a cat litter tray. This was also one of the most expensive campsites we stayed at on our road trip. I think we paid over €40 for our very short one night stay. We arrived late at night and drove off early next day. We used no electricity and had one shower each. We scored this high because of convenience (if travelling across Germany / Europe) it is an easy stop for rest & sleep. It is not a destination campsite despite the adverts suggesting it is next to or near the Chiemsee etc but it is clear that this is only useful for those stopping off on their way to or from somewhere else and wanting to break up the journey. For that it’s perfect.

Disliked Die Autobahn ist gleich nebendran. Da hat man immerzu den Geräuschpegel. Aber als Zwischenstoppein idealer Platz.

Local attractions

To the lake first, to learn the ropes at the sailing school, take out a pedalo or rowing boat, plunge in for some swimming, or have a stroll or bike ride around the water's edge. Less actively, take a paddle steamer trip for a scenic cruise around the water, or uncover your easel and paints to join in with the many Chiemseemaler artists who have painted the landscape here. Chiemsee has three islands, the biggest two of which (the Fraueninsel and the Herreninsel) can be reached all year round by the passenger ferry of the Chiemsee-Schifffahrt. A monastery of Benedicitine nuns has stood on the Fraueninsel since the eighth century; meanwhile, Herreninsel has two castles, one a former monastery and the other – once home to Ludwig II – modelled on the Palace of Versailles. Cycling and hiking trails from Chiemsee to Chiemgau can be accessed directly from the site.
