Camping La Plaine Tonique: Flyboarding in the lake

General

  • Lakeside site in a region of Renaissance palaces and listed buildings
  • Waterpark with five pools and lake with beach, watersports and fishing
  • Snack bar, bakery and bar-restaurant serving French and Bressan dishes

What a waterpark! For not only are there five (oui, five, and all fab) pools at the aquatic centre of Rhône-Alpes site of Camping La Plaine Tonique, there's a 90-hectare lake too: it's surely safe to say that this could be the most vast campsite waterpark in all the land.

The lake is a top Ain department spot for watersports and fishing among its beaut waters, or you could determine to merely laze on its fine sand beach idly watching the boats and other craft bobbing about on the water. No matter what you decide to do, the waterpark and beach are all lifeguarded for safe times for all ages.

La Plaine Tonique is a couple of minutes' drive from Montrevel-en-Bresse and 18 kilometres from the department capital of Bourg-en-Bresse. A wide range of other activities are available aside from the water: you could shoot arrows on target (or not) in an archery session, challenge the family team to a round of miniature golf, or let the friendly and helpful team entertain you at the magic and clown shows, concerts and parties run regularly for all ages.

Reception's your destination if you want to check your emails, surf the web and collect snail mail, or to access info on the region and its activities and attractions or tips from the amiable team. Trails lead straight from the site for mountain biking, cycling and strolling; paintball, karting and an equestrian farm are all available a couple of kilometres away.

Once you're out of the water or have brushed off the sand from your relaxed and newly tanned bod, it's an easy amble to find French and Bressan dishes at the site's bar-restaurant, cleverly set next to the lake. A snack bar and bakery are also on site.

Please note

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Really nice large pitches with a toilet/cleaning facilities on each plot of pitches so you don’t have to walk far to the toilet, what I found especially good about the toilet block is that there was an attendant there all day everyday cleaning the various area over and over. The site has a large lake with beach for young and older kids to enjoy, it does get rather busy as it’s for the locals also, the same with the swimming pool although it’s large enough with plenty of separate pools for it to not feel too over crowded. There is entertainment everyday on an evening if you wanted to get out the caravan whilst cooler. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The older kids where abut bored but that’s more down to the fact there not in to sporting activities.

    Disliked:

The park is Rather large with not much signage to How to get to the various plots of pitches. There is boards on the toilets with maps but not many signs around to tell you which way your heading. There is only one restaurant that you cannot get in as it’s always busy so no spontaneous teas out on sight and one drinks bar at the beach that serves snacks also.

Sandy beach with inflatables in the lake was a highlight for the kids ( age 9 and 13). Most if not all pitches are in shaded areas , pools were clean and pool/beach bar served really good food , snacks and tasty cocktails :)
Staff was helpful and welcoming, great shower toilets facilities including launderette.
We will definitely be back next year!

Grass pitch in the trees shadow, with hedges around your parcel, access to the lake and swimming pools ( outdoor and indoors), access to different water sports and equipment to hire( sup, paddle boats, kayaks, engine boats and others), quiet camping but if you want you can go to the disco at the beach. Nice sandy beaches, with even dogs access part for swim. Toilets and showers.

Excellent water sports facilities. Beach and lake really nice. Lots of activities for young children. Clean facilities and plenty around the site. Good food at the take away on site. Fresh bread and pastries available in the morning.

    Disliked:

This is a very large site - so if you are looking for something quiet then not for you. Lots of children running around until late in to the night. Not a bad thing but our children are very young 2 and 5 months so this was a bit too much at bedtime. Bit of a wait at reception to check in after a long drive.

Spacious pitches and we had a nice pitch with a view close to the lake. Plenty of optional activities to keep you occupied. Overall things seemed well run and well organised and the site is maintained to a good standard, making for pleasant surroundings for a nice stay.

    Disliked:

Tannoy announcements across the site about upcoming activities were a little irritating, although understandable given the huge size of the site. Water standpipes seemed to be shared by several pitches and a single electrical point also services multiple pitches so extension cable reel is essential. This is quite a busy site which seems to be popular with families and therefore it can be a little noisy for those, like us, not used to having children around.

Local attractions

The Sougey Farm, the Royal Monastery of Brou, the medieval city of Pérouges, the Cerdon caves and Touroparc Zoo are all within an hour of the site. La Plaine Tonique is partnered with many local attractions and can offer discounts to park guests: ask for more info from the team at reception.

Half an hour from the site and its vast waterpark is another watery body at Bouvent leisure park, set beside a 21-hectare lake with sailing schools, kayaking, supervised rowing sessions and lessons of all sorts. A path leads around the edge of the lake if you'd prefer to stroll, or you could take the fitness or orienteering trail, go fishing, tee off at the nine-hole golf course or find a secluded spot in the picnic area.

A must-do local option is a trip to Bourg-en-Bresse, to see the spectacular church of Notre Dame and the old town centre, around the pretty Place de l'Hotel de Ville and the surrounding streets with medieval and Renaissance buildings.
