General

  • Lakeside site in a region of Renaissance palaces and listed buildings
  • Waterpark with five pools and lake with beach, watersports and fishing
  • Snack bar, bakery and bar-restaurant serving French and Bressan dishes

What a waterpark! For not only are there five (oui, five, and all fab) pools at the aquatic centre of Rhône-Alpes site of Camping La Plaine Tonique, there's a 90-hectare lake too: it's surely safe to say that this could be the most vast campsite waterpark in all the land.

The lake is a top Ain department spot for watersports and fishing among its beaut waters, or you could determine to merely laze on its fine sand beach idly watching the boats and other craft bobbing about on the water. No matter what you decide to do, the waterpark and beach are all lifeguarded for safe times for all ages.

La Plaine Tonique is a couple of minutes' drive from Montrevel-en-Bresse and 18 kilometres from the department capital of Bourg-en-Bresse. A wide range of other activities are available aside from the water: you could shoot arrows on target (or not) in an archery session, challenge the family team to a round of miniature golf, or let the friendly and helpful team entertain you at the magic and clown shows, concerts and parties run regularly for all ages.

Reception's your destination if you want to check your emails, surf the web and collect snail mail, or to access info on the region and its activities and attractions or tips from the amiable team. Trails lead straight from the site for mountain biking, cycling and strolling; paintball, karting and an equestrian farm are all available a couple of kilometres away.

Once you're out of the water or have brushed off the sand from your relaxed and newly tanned bod, it's an easy amble to find French and Bressan dishes at the site's bar-restaurant, cleverly set next to the lake. A snack bar and bakery are also on site.

Amazing lake and beach area. Water park for the kids.

    Disliked:

The barrier to get in the park struggles to recognise English number plates so it made life difficult getting in and out (especially as we have a right hand drive car and you have to put number in on left side!)

The range of things to do for older kids - we did table tennis, swimming, water sports, water obstacle course. Toilet blocks were clean and good showers. It had a small shop and a snack bar. Pitch was a good size and flat. The lake is lovely.

    Disliked:

It was very busy (it was August!) and therefore very noisy at all times of day. The aquapark, lake and play areas are all open to the public so also very busy. The aquapark has very strict rules about what you can wear (only lycra type swimwear for the boys/men which didn't go down well with my teen sons and I had to go shopping for this, no other clothing or footwear at all poolside) and it is enforced. It would be helpful if it says this in the site listing, but I didn't see it. The pools and slides although fun are very very cold and my kids couldn't stay in long.
The wash blocks don't have soap for washing your hands after the loo, so you have to either take your own or return to your pitch!
Finally the gates in and out of the camp site has an automatic barrier that is supposed to work by number plate recognition. It doesn't work well for many vehicles and it seems to have a particular problem with UK plates. It was such a pain everytime we went to the supermarket, we had to go in reception to get it opened. Finally on the last time of complaining they gave us a code to use. Just a shame we didn't have that to start with.

Facilities are very clean and accessible. Staff are helpful and polite. Lots for children to do in safe environment. Easy access to town and carrefour. Good walks around site. Easy to find.

    Disliked:

Cost of optional activities can make stay more expensive if not aware. Would be good to have costs on website for booking and maybe be able to buy activity packages at a lower cost prior to arrival. Booking in quite time consuming and not being able to pay for site in cash was not expected. Only allowed to accept €300.

Local attractions

The Sougey Farm, the Royal Monastery of Brou, the medieval city of Pérouges, the Cerdon caves and Touroparc Zoo are all within an hour of the site. La Plaine Tonique is partnered with many local attractions and can offer discounts to park guests: ask for more info from the team at reception.

Half an hour from the site and its vast waterpark is another watery body at Bouvent leisure park, set beside a 21-hectare lake with sailing schools, kayaking, supervised rowing sessions and lessons of all sorts. A path leads around the edge of the lake if you'd prefer to stroll, or you could take the fitness or orienteering trail, go fishing, tee off at the nine-hole golf course or find a secluded spot in the picnic area.

A must-do local option is a trip to Bourg-en-Bresse, to see the spectacular church of Notre Dame and the old town centre, around the pretty Place de l'Hotel de Ville and the surrounding streets with medieval and Renaissance buildings.
