  • Lakeside site in a region of Renaissance palaces and listed buildings
  • Waterpark with five pools and lake with beach, watersports and fishing
  • Snack bar, bakery and bar-restaurant serving French and Bressan dishes
What a waterpark! For not only are there five (oui, five, and all fab) pools at the aquatic centre of Rhône-Alpes site of Camping La Plaine Tonique, there's a 90-hectare lake too: it's surely safe to say that this could be the most vast campsite waterpark in all the land. The lake is a top Ain department spot for watersports and fishing among its beaut waters, or you could determine to merely laze on its fine sand beach idly watching the boats and other craft bobbing about on the water. No matter what you decide to do, the waterpark and beach are all lifeguarded for safe times for all ages. La Plaine Tonique is a couple of minutes' drive from Montrevel-en-Bresse and 18 kilometres from the department capital of Bourg-en-Bresse. A wide range of other activities are available aside from the water: you could shoot arrows on target (or not) in an archery session, challenge the family team to a round of miniature golf, or let the friendly and helpful team entertain you at the magic and clown shows, concerts and parties run regularly for all ages. Reception's your destination if you want to check your emails, surf the web and collect snail mail, or to access info on the region and its activities and attractions or tips from the amiable team. Trails lead straight from the site for mountain biking, cycling and strolling; paintball, karting and an equestrian farm are all available a couple of kilometres away. Once you're out of the water or have brushed off the sand from your relaxed and newly tanned bod, it's an easy amble to find French and Bressan dishes at the site's bar-restaurant, cleverly set next to the lake. A snack bar and bakery are also on site.

Local attractions

The Sougey Farm, the Royal Monastery of Brou, the medieval city of Pérouges, the Cerdon caves and Touroparc Zoo are all within an hour of the site. La Plaine Tonique is partnered with many local attractions and can offer discounts to park guests: ask for more info from the team at reception. Half an hour from the site and its vast waterpark is another watery body at Bouvent leisure park, set beside a 21-hectare lake with sailing schools, kayaking, supervised rowing sessions and lessons of all sorts. A path leads around the edge of the lake if you'd prefer to stroll, or you could take the fitness or orienteering trail, go fishing, tee off at the nine-hole golf course or find a secluded spot in the picnic area. A must-do local option is a trip to Bourg-en-Bresse, to see the spectacular church of Notre Dame and the old town centre, around the pretty Place de l'Hotel de Ville and the surrounding streets with medieval and Renaissance buildings.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very good value for money. We loved the lake, including the water sports on offer, and swimming pools. Our pitch was very large (12 x 12m), so it was large enough to have a badminton court on, as well as a tent, gazebo and car. It was a corner pitch, next to the toilet and shower building, so may have been larger than average because of that. The toilets and showers were very clean and well maintained. The location was good, near the Jura mountains. There are numerous walking and cycle paths from the campsite. We enjoyed walking around the lake and on another of the cycle paths.

Disliked: It’s a very large campsite with a lot of children running, riding and scooting around. There is also loud music some nights until 11. This was fine for us, but if you want a quiet campsite then this may not be for you. We couldn’t get the wi-fi to work from our pitch.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The pitch was well laid out and a good size, facilities were fine too. The manmade beach and lake with water sports was fantastic.

Disliked: The bar was very difficult to get served at but the biggest issue was the bizarre rules at the pool for swim shorts with a guard on entrance picking out and not allowing entrance to boys and adult men on the way in for not wearing skin tight swimwear!!

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good, friendly atmosphere on the campsite. Good layout with generous pitches. Very safe for children.
Lots of good, sensible activities: pétanque, horse riding show, mini disco on the beach. Great for fishing too!
The lake is good for paddle boarding and kayaks. Beach with safe swimming areas. Track around lake good for cycling. Montreval, the village next to the campsite, is well served with 4 supermarkets that you can cycle to. Bourg en bresse is worth a visit. The parking at the covered market is free and Notre Dame church has fantastic stained glass windows.

Disliked: Noise on the campsite is not an issue. By 11pm it is quiet. However, there was noise - French rapper music - outside the campsite that did not start until midnight but went on till at least 2.30am. Some reviewers mistakenly believed the noise was on the campsite, but this shows how loud it was. It could be temporary thing but lasted for the whole of our visit in late July and early August.
